On The Importance of Quality Comments - Once Again.

OK guys,

I've seen a few posts on the importance of providing quality comments before but I'll repeat it tonight too...

PLEASE, provide quality comments!

I understand that you may be new to the community and probably don't see comments as important, but they are!

Why?

Here's Colton's post explaining why: 5,000 Comments, Comments Are Content Too!

Another great post by Vitaliy right here with tips on how to comment properly: How to cut your workload in half with site comments, but also how to use it right.

Both Colton and Vitaliy advise to ruthlessly disapprove comment that don't pertain to the post or are too vague, or simply low-quality for whatever reason.

Before I used to either accept all comments or slightly edit them myself - but you know what, this takes too much time and I don't want to explain to the commentator about the edits that I've done.

So, this time, even though it sometimes hurts me to click the button "Disapprove", I must do it to save myself some time. Besides, why should I feel bad, when I have a feeling that the commentator hasn't even read my post properly??? I do get that feeling quite often and I can't say that my writing style is THAT boring :/

I even make the reader's life easier by providing a few engaging questions at the end of the post and even those aren't answered - all I get is just a simple, general "I liked this and that" comment.

C'mooooon!

Please, if you do something, do it well.

Don't waste your time by providing low-quality comments. If you don't like the post or the topic is simply not close to your heart, then skip it!

Personally, I just FEEL that I can't leave a quality comment because the topic is just not mine, that I can't even engage anyhow even with asking quality questions - then I just skip it - and I make everyone's life easier by not complicating it lol.

Vitaliy in his post shares 3 tips:

1) Talk about the topic of the post specifically.
2) Ask questions about the post.
3) Relate to the post by sharing a similar experience.

Here's the link to his post again: How to cut your workload in half with site comments, but also how to use it right. Read it, it's great.

So if you are a newbie and you started using SiteComments and I disapproved your comment, please don't take it personally but rather try to improve your commenting skills. After all, business does come first.

I am sure many Wealthy Affiliate members will agree with me on this.

Or not?

Great post Zarina and thank you for the mention!

Great comments keep the content rolling and frankly speaking, people enjoy reading other people's thoughts when they land on a blog. If the comment offers no addition to the discussion, then it doesn't help.

Plus, better comments lead to more reading and that leads to better SEO.

In rare instances, I've had amazing comment givers who have gone so far as to write an entire post in the frame of a comment, but when I read that, I was very touched by how much effort they put into it that I even offered to check out their site, as a way of saying thanks for their time. I hope more people do that, it helps both parties.

Of course, it's a two way street and we as content creators have to offer up the kind of content that gets people reading and wanting to share their thoughts too.

Hey Vitaliy,
Good to hear from you again!

I'll be honest, I didn't give comments much credit just until recently. I mean I'd ask for a couple of comments in the WA comment thread but I didn't think it was too important until I remember that I found some website in Google because the keyword that was used was found in the comment section of that website, not within the content that was published. Say what!

I'll be paying more attention to this aspect of blogging/online business and I'll now be tougher when it comes to disapproving the comments that I didn't particularly enjoy.

Thanks for sharing your opinion, much appreciated :)
Zarina

I had that happen once, a post of mine appeared on the first page only because of a comment that mentioned a program. It is totally possible!

Great reminder Zarina. I've had to disapprove comments in the past and skip commenting websites as I could not relate to the post in question to givea justifiable, worthy comment.
I also find people are commenting when in essence what they are doing is providing feedback.

Hi Jackie,
Yes, that's a common issue indeed - receiving feedback as opposed to a comment. Seeing comments like "nice layout, nice article, nice whatever" can be annoying haha.
Oh well, we gotta do what we gotta do - business comes first, and if we must disapprove certain comments, then so be it. Nothing personal!

I totally agree Zarina and thank you for addressing the subject once again. It is unfortunate that it happens so often so a constant reminder on the community board is always good.

I think this topic will come up again and again. Sometimes, it's just the newbies here who don't know yet about the importance of comments and they don't put as many efforts into it. Oh well - that's why we keep reminding them here again :)

I do Zarina, the worst are those that repeat questions, or say, 'I too have been wanting to know this'. I believe its this ranking issue that wants most wanting to comment at all cost,

I think it's more about earning the points so that they can get comments too - not the ranking - but still it's not an excuse for providing low-quality comments!

Thanks for sharing, Zarina.

No problem at all!

Thank you for the great advice.

My pleasure :)

Zarina,
This is spot on! I used to feel bad disapproving comments but I think really bad comments where the person clearly just skimmed the post can hurt you. If it's just typos that's easy to edit and approve.
Erica

Tell me about it! It took me sooooo long to finally start disapproving comments (I still kinda feel bad but still do it). Typos is no big deal I can edit those too but changing the whole comment is too much hassle for me.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts by Erica :)

Totally agree. I often need to edit some of the comments before I publish them as well.

It's so much trouble to edit the comments sometimes, especially if you have a few of them pending! Now I just disapprove and period. Business comes first!

Great Post Zarina .. Cheers, William.

Read Colton's and Vitaliy's posts - they definitely have more value talk about comments ;)

Getting quality comments is sometimes a lot of work. It will pay off in the long run to disapprove bad ones.
John

Hey John,
Definitely agree with you - after all, our business does come first and we need to eliminate the comments that are low-quality (Gosh, it makes me ache when I remember the times when I had to suffer by accepting the low-quality comments on my blog!)
