What if this works?

Don't be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves. ~ Dale Carnegie

One of the most frequently asked question I hear is, "What if it doesn't work?" In fact, that is one of the most frequently asked questions out of my mouth, too!

"What if" seems to be one of our favorite questions. It isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is a question and questions make us think. Thinking is a good thing...most of the time. We often get into overthinking and that is when we have difficulties.

What if this doesn't work?

So what? I mean really... so what?

Most of us have spent hundreds perhaps even thousands of dollars on things that don't work. So what if this is just one more thing that doesn't work?

I am only able to say that because I know for a fact that Wealthy Affiliate does work. I know it does, because I work at it. I haven't made thousands of dollars yet, but I will and soon. I know this because I believe it and because I am putting heart and soul into my work and into learning the skills that will make my work a success.

The great thing about WA is that we are all afforded these opportunities!

So if Wealthy Affiliate doesn't work for you, so what? In my humble opinion, if you can't get WA to work, you won't get anything to work!

What if this does work?

Most of the time this is not the first question we ask when we are exploring new things like joining Wealthy Affiliate. We ask "What if it doesn't work?" "Do I get my money back?"

But what if we started asking the not-so-obvious question? What if we asked, "What if this does work?" How would we look at things then?

I have been reading some more of the book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I love one of the things he talks about in the introduction.

"For example, one dad had a habit of saying, 'I can't afford it.' The other dad forbade those words to be used. He insisted I ask, 'How can I afford it?' One is a statement, and the other is a question. One lets you off the hook, and the other forces you to think. My soon-to-be-rich dad would explain that by automatically saying the words, 'I can't afford it,' your brain stops working. By asking the question 'How can I afford it?' your brain is put to work. He did not mean that you should buy everything you want. He was fanatical about exercising your mind, the most powerful computer in the world. He'd say, 'My brain gets stronger every day because I exercise it. The stronger it gets, the more money I can make.' He believed that automatically saying 'I can't afford it' was a sign of mental laziness."

I have read and reread this portion. I have read it to my spouse. I have read it to my grandchildren.

Now when I catch myself saying, "I can't afford it" I force myself to ask instead, "How can I afford it?" or my own variation, "How can I afford not to?" (This one applies to things like purchasing a web domain or things related to my business.)

Instead of asking "What if this doesn't work?" I ask myself, "What if it does work?"

Just a slight shift in thinking

Even the slightest shift in our thinking can change the entire outcome. Think about that for a second. There is very little difference in the two questions, and yet there is an entire world of differences between them. It all depends on what you choose to focus on. As Brian Tracy so aptly stated, โ€œYou are not what you think you are, but what you think, you are.โ€

If we can change our thinking, I have heard that we can change our lives and maybe even our worlds. I say we go for it!

Hi Karin
Thank you for this post as it confirms that most us who think negatively need to change our way of thinking.
The brain is what effects the body. If we continually tell ourselves that we can't then we believe it we can't. But when we think positively things change and get better. This is a lesson I've had to learn over the years.

Once again thanks.
Wishing you all the best.

Tremendous post, Karin! There's an old saying that goes something like " whether you think you can or think you can't, either way you'll be correct".

Let's all choose to Think We Can and focus on What If This Does Work!

Great point! I really think our attitude is everything in this or any business.

They say we don't regret the things we tried and did not succeed at its the things we wished we had tried but didn't that causes people angst. I like your post and challenging one;s own brain by reframing the negative statement into a question.

I don't want to have a huge list of regrets...

I have written that section out and look at it every day now. It is a good reminder to me that I need to think differently.
