Let's talk about your BIG BUT [Excuses don't work]

The reference I use in this post will not only "date" me, but it will also give you a glimpse into the kind of humor I appreciate. It did give me the chance to create a blog header in Canva, though!

There was a movie in the 1980s called Pee Wee's Big Adventure. It was the tale of Pee Wee Herman and his relentless pursuit of his stolen bike. Along the way, he meets all sorts of people who become his friends (even the most unlikely ones). One of the people he meets is Simone, a waitress with a big brute of a boyfriend. Simone wants more from her life, but...

Simone:
I know you're right, Pee-wee, but...

Pee-wee:
But what? Everyone I know has a big but. C'mon, Simone, let's talk about *your* big but.

What is your "big but?"

We all have at least one "big but". I have several.

One of my oft-used "buts" is "But what if I don't know how? What if I am not smart enough?"

I have used it as an excuse for years. That and this combo: "But what if I fail? But what if I succeed?"

The one I use the most is, "Yeah, but..." (Are Yeahbuts related to rabbits?)

What's your "big but?" What is that excuse that you use to keep yourself from really succeeding?

Excuses are a dime a dozen

Excuses are cheap and unfortunately, they just don't work.

One of the areas I tend to use excuses most is in health and fitness.

I say to myself, "I really need to work out/walk tonight."

"Yeah, but ________________ (fill in excuse..."I'm too tired," "I don't feel good," "whatever excuse seems fitting at the time.")."

I know that I will feel better when I am done working out or walking or lifting weights or whatever it is I decide to do, but actually getting myself to do it (and do it without excuses as to why I can't) is the tricky part.

The same thing applies when it comes to my business websites.

I know I will "feel" better when I work on my sites. It's just sorting through the excuses first of why I can't—"I'm tired." "I wrote all day at work." "I have nothing to say."

Preparing for my "Live" launch

As I prepare my training materials for my live classes, I am writing up a list of common excuses that I hear people use when I mention what I do in my "spare" time.

A few examples are:

  • I don't know what to write about
  • I don't write well
  • I don't know how to do this

Well, none of us knew how to do this when we first started, am I right?!

Part of the reason for doing some live classes in my community is because I want to be able to show people hands-on how to address some of these excuses.

We all know that excuses don't work and neither do we if we use them!

I need some help

I listed a few of the excuses I hear, but I need some more. What are some other excuses you have heard (if you don't mind sharing them, please list them in the comments below!)?

Once my live classes start, depending on their success, I will share how I do it in a training here on WA.

I appreciate all of you who have helped me so many times in the past!

Best wishes,
Karin 😁

My biggest but has got to be, I don't have time I'm too busy

No more excuses.... thanks

Karin,
I just love your blog post. I felt like this post speaks to me and the many excuses I use to procasinate and hold myself. I need to write for my website or study for my exam...but I need to take a nap first. That nap gone rejuvenate me...but now I have to eat before I work to focus better. And especially when it comes to working out my buts were just like yours. Great post.

So true

here are a couple of mine;
-> but I dont have enough money
-> but I don't know well enough about it
-> but the internet/computer is slow
-> but I just had a long day of class/work
-> but Im hungry (lol) very frequent one
-> but I need a break/some rest

Im sure there are many more, "but" I am currently multitasking also so I have to go now. lol Thats probably my biggest But.

Great article!

I was going to add a few buts to the list but Nauna has covered most of the ones I had thought of!
😀

Turns out I have a lot of buts haha. I'm working on it thought :) Its nice to see that many people face the same challenges and get through them.

I don't have time; I don't have the money; my mother won't let me (lol); I have too many chores to do; I have to go cook supper;

I know there are many more, but my mind is blank. Besides, the kitty wants dinner...

Great to address the "Big But" of excuses we make up to not do things. Thanks

Agree with you
All the best
Janet

Totally agree with you. However, some 'buts' are difficult to overcome. Like the lose of close friends. Never mind, I'm still determined to push forward. Jim
