Happy Canada Day!

I just wanted to give a shout out to all my Canada Wealthy Affiliate brothers and sisters on July 1, Canada Day.

I didn't know what Canada Day meant, so I looked it up. This is what Wikipedia says about Canada Day. "A federal statutory holiday, it celebrates the anniversary of July 1, 1867, the effective date of the Constitution Act, 1867 (then called the British North America Act, 1867), which united the three separate colonies of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada."

I am sure this may be an oversimplification, but it also meant that "Canada became a 'kingdom in its own right' within the British Empire commonly known as the Dominion of Canada. Although still a British colony, Canada gained an increased level of political control and governance over its own affairs, the British parliament and Cabinet maintaining political control over certain areas, such as foreign affairs, national defence, and constitutional changes. Canada gradually gained increasing independence over the years, notably with the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931, until finally becoming completely independent with the passing of the Constitution Act, 1982 which served to fully patriate (to transfer legislation to the authority of an autonomous country from its previous mother country) the Canadian constitution."

On July 4, the United States will celebrate its Independence Day. Can anyone tell me if Canada Day is similar?

Whatever the case, I wish you all a Happy Canada Day today! Especially to Wealthy Affiliate founders Kyle and Carson!

Hi Karin,

Canada negotiated their independence through a process that evolved over several years like you shared that all started on July 1st 1867. It was a peaceful process.

The US ceased theirs through The Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776. Not all countries recognized the US as being independent from GB at that time, and neither did GB. Hence the War of Independence. This was definitely not a peaceful process.

It wasn't until the Treaty of Paris on September 3rd 1783, seven years after the Declaration of Independence that war between GB and the US was formally ended. King George III and GB recognized the US as being an independent nation.

Although Great Britain lost the US, it went on to build the largest, and most controversial Empire the World has ever known on which the sun never set. I often wonder if the US hand't become an independent nation until later, what our World would be like today.

If GB and King George III worked amicably for the welfare of the people living in the American Colonies, perhaps a peaceful path to Independence would have been possible, much like what happened with Canada.

It appears that Great Britain totally neglected the US Colonies and left them to fend for themselves that led to a lot of hardship, unrest and confrontation. GB didn't treat the US Colonies fairly. That became the trademark of the Empire, which was used initially for the enhancement of GB rather than the respective countries the British ruled.

I was born in India when it was a part of the British Empire. The impact of the British in India lives on to this day, with English being the only language that unites a country which in many ways where each State has it's own language.

Unlike Canada or the US, India got its Independence through peaceful disobedience and protest. That was a messy affair as that sub-continent was divided into two countries, India and Pakistan.

Thanks for bringing up these important historical points Karin that got me thinking.

Edwin
