Add value to the world by helping people solve their problems

There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up. ~ John Holmes

Ahhh, the exercise of helping people.

When we build our businesses, why are we doing it?

If your answer is strictly to make money, then you may be in the wrong business. If all you want to do is to make money, you can get a job doing practically anything to make money.

But if you want to make a difference, add value to the world, then you might consider helping other people solve their problems.

That is what our websites should be doing. They should be helping people solve their problem whether that problem is what is the best pair of running shoes to buy or what is the best brand of refrigerator.

While those may not be life or death problems, they are problems that people turn to the Internet to solve. They turn to your website with the hope that you can lead them in the right direction.

By giving accurate and fair reviews on our websites (if that be the thing you are doing on your website) we can help people improve their lives.

But, as Brian Tracy points out, “Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, 'What’s in it for me?'”

What is in it for me?

You may ask then, "If all I am doing is 'helping' people, how will I make any money?"

Audrey Hepburn may have answered this question best when she said, “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.”

You have two hands (this is literal, but understood figuratively). You can use one hand to help others and the other for helping yourself. When you help others, you often end up helping yourself anyway, even without trying!

Consider this quote by Flora Edwards, “In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.”

Think about that... Whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us!

If we recommend a great blender and it helps our reader, they may purchase that item and we may get a commission. How is that for a circle?

Everything you want in life....

According to Zig Ziglar, "You can have everything you want in life if you just help enough people get what they want in life."

I don't know about you, but that sounds kind of hard. I mean, how can I help enough people get what they want in life? I don't even know what they want.

That, my friends, is why we write blog posts—hundreds of blog posts. Because, you see, we may never know what that anonymous person visiting our site is looking for, but if we have written enough within our niche, it is likely that if they are searching for it, they will find it with us.

Our blogs are not useless . . . .

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another. ~ Charles Dickens

Our blogs are not useless or wastes of time. They are living and breathing items that exist within our virtual property (our websites). Every time someone interacts with a post through the reading of one, that post has renewed life. With life, action may occur. That action is, with hope, a help to the person who read it. That action is also a probable sale.

But sometimes, as Andrew Carnegie said, There is no use whatever trying to help people who do not help themselves. You cannot push anyone up a ladder unless he is willing to climb himself.”

Have you ever tried to push someone up a ladder? Trust me, if they don't want to go, they aren't going to! It is like leading a horse into a trailer. If that horse does not want to go into the trailer, then chances are they will put up a fight. If a 1250 pound horse decides to fight with you, guess who usually wins?

Live for something . . . .

It’s not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of person-kind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely. ~ Leo Buscaglia

People will pay you to help them solve their problems from shoe purchases to books that enhance their lives to big-ticket sales like cars or boats. People want to be helped with their problem no matter how small. If you can add value to the world through helping people improve their lives by helping them solve their problems you have hit that illusive "sweet spot" where your actions (words) make the difference in the lives of others.

Now that is something to live for!

I totally agree with every word you have written. My first website was How to be Dad.

I was reluctant at first but using my own experiences and telling personal stories about my own experiences as a dad has brought in many readers to my website.

I have received many private emails of gratitude for the service and help my website has given dads all over the world.

Over the years I have built up trust with readers and some have bought books and others items relating to parenthood. I feel really good that my website has added value to readers.

The monetary gain will follow

Excellent! What a super idea and congrats for proving yourself to be an authority and helping other dads become better dads! Using our own experiences is, I believe, the best way to build authority because it says, "I've been there."

Building trust is the ultimate!

Coming from a sales background I listened to may of the sales gurus such as Zig Ziglar. Another famous quote that you hear is "Givers Gain" by I believe Dr. Ivan Misner from the BNI business referral group. It is something to think about when learning how to gain referrals when you are in business.

Thank you for that. I had not heard that phrase before—Givers Gain. I will certainly be thinking more about that as I work through ways to be more helpful to my fellow man wherever he (or she) may be! :)

I know that a lot of what you wrote about here Karin is in the training, but you've managed to capture the heart of it. The training, while good, is an intro and how to. Insights like yours and the way you present adds value to it, and brings it closer to home. Thanks for great post.

Greg

Hah! I spelled psot right for once. lol

Thank you for that, Greg. When writing our psots if we keep in mind the other person, it just makes it easier (at least in my humble opinion)!

I think that's one thing that I've always noticed - the difference between when someone's talking at me instead of taking to me. It doesn't have to be blogging, it could any form of help. You can, kind of tell, if a person's interested in helping you, or not. It's not the greatest feeling.

That's why I've started taking a different approach to blogging - writing a bit more personable and relatable posts about how I would go about doing things or solving a problem.

I'm still following everything that we've been taught here, but a commission or sale hasn't really been on my mind as much as making a connection with whoever's reading my blog, hoping they appreciate my honest advice.

Thanks for the post, Karin

Isaiah 😊

Thank you, Isaiah. I think you are doing a great job by writing more personably and relatably. People can make that connection with you and it makes you a trusted authority.

Be well.
