It is good if you are writing a page that you
do not want people distracted from the content
for example. Go to edit your page and you will
find a dropdown on the right depending on your
theme that lets you choose between sidebar or no sidebar.

Not all themes have this. If you've used it before with your current theme, then your theme has this option.
In WP, while Editing a Page, look at the sidebar to your right. You should see a Page Attributes section. In that section you should also see "Templates" with a drop down menu to select the no sidebar option or full width option for that page.
If you don't see it there, look in Appearances > Theme >Options.

thanks Jude you are right (of course) in other themes I have worked with It is in the Appearances tab goes to show just ask and help is on the way in minutes..... WA is awesome the help is endless.
