Quality Commenting 101 - The Easy Way to Build a Powerful Online Presence

Comments are content and you should strive to add value to the post that you are commenting on.

The good comments are at least 2 paragraphs and the really good comments can be 5 paragraphs or more!

These are like mini guest posts and can really engage the reader and make them click on your link and visit your site to see what else you have to say.

Google loves this!

It adds valuable content to the site you are commenting on and visitors clicking through to your site.

It is a win - win!

Here are some tips from my good friend Ryan Biddulph and his book, How to Build an Online Empire Through Blog Commenting. You can find it Amazon.com.

  • Your Intent - Hold a pure intent. Comment to help. Comment to build friendships with pros from your niche. Comment to create value for a fellow blogger. Comment to expand your presence.
  • Tell Your Story - Each person lives an intriguing story because your story and experiences make you, you. Nobody can re-create your story. Nobody in human history can live your experience. Capitalize on this idea to brand yourself like a pro in your comments.
  • Don't Make Your Comment All About You - Selfish commentators don’t do well. Nobody likes someone who talks only about themselves all day long. How can a blogger help you if they’re busy talking about themselves? How can a blogger listen to you if they’re talking about themselves? Share your story but give props. Thank the blogger for sharing their thoughts. Reference a point made in the post. Doing so shows that you’re listening, that you care about the blogger and that you appreciate them sharing their insight with you.
  • Personalize the Experience - Who do you remember? The person who addresses you by name, offline? Or the person who doesn’t use your name? Here in Savusavu, Fiji, I meet up with my man William at the local DVD shop. We chat for a minute or two every few days. Anyway, when William addresses me as “Ryan”, that strengthens our bond. My first name is the best sounding word in the English language. At least to me. Same deal with you probably, because we dig being noticed. We dig standing out from the crowd. We dig folks who make us feel special. We dig people who care, who take the extra second, and extra bit of energy, to address us by our name.

OK, let’s see how I do it. I would start my comment with a “Hi John”. Doing so makes my blogging buddy feel special. Doing so also sets an intimate, personalized tone for my comment. Doing so is just plain nice. Nice people tend to make plenty of friends, and entrepreneurs with huge friend networks rock out their online business. Before I sign off I mention my blogging buddy by name again. Adding this little, intimate, personalized touch creates a lasting impression. So lead off with name dropping and close your comment with a name mention, thanking the blogger for sharing their insight.

Biddulph, Ryan (2014-09-13). Blogging from Paradise: How to Build an Online Empire through Blog Commenting (Kindle Locations 458-462). . Kindle Edition.

Ryan shares much more in his awesome book. I highly recommend it.

The next time you are adding a comment on someones site, strive to add massive value and use the tips above. It will help you to build relationships as well as position yourself as someone worth listening too.

Important info to think about JV! Thanks for the write up!

Great points. I will be looking at comments differently from now on

Nice thanks for the great info

That's a really good point that long, meaty comments are great for our blogs and for SEO. I spent a while trying to figure out why none of my organic traffic was commenting on my blog and then realized that I wasn't asking specific questions at the end of my blog posts to spark a discussion. I'm still working on trying to get more organic comments, but I've tried to add one or 2 questions in bold at the end of every blog post.

Hey Kierstan,

That is a great tip for engaging your audience and encouraging interaction!

Best,
JV

Thanks, I am going to try this: asking for comments at the end of my blogs.
