I'm in the process of purchasing my domain name. The .com is available with the option to also purchase the .net .org. .info. Should I buy them?

I purchased the .com where I could but did not buy any further at this early stage.

I would definitely buy the .net because that is almost as popular as .com and many ppl use it. So I wouldn't want someone to copy my domain name with the .net extension. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

If .com is available purchase it. I was there about 2 months ago and only purchased .com. I want to understand more about building a website first. Now I ready to build two more website and I still will purchased .com only.

I actually just saw Kyle and someone else discussing this in chat the other day. The other person had been buy up the other extensions for their many websites. He questioned Kyle about the need to do that and Kyle said that no, it wasn't needed.

Hi Julia,
I come from a domain name background, so perhaps I have a slightly different angle. Registering the .net; .org and .info in this context is known as "defensive registration", basically to prevent anyone else from registering them and thereby avoiding confusion with your site, especially if they are likely to be competition. You could wait until later, but there is always the risk that one or more of the domains will have been registered in the meantime. If you really love your .com domain as a brand, see it as the name you really must have, and feel that possessing it will be of great benefit to your business long-term and funds aren't an issue, then, personally, I would go ahead and register the other extensions. It depends how sort after you think the word/phrase is likely to be.
Also, and this may be controversial to some, if your .com domain is a keyword term, owning the other extensions and setting up url forwarding, (easily done via your registrar), can sometimes get you additional traffic. There will be people here on WA who disagree, but sometimes domains are natural type-ins and also some will have been websites in the past. I know of .net domains which receive more traffic than their .com equivalents. I own domains which I have parked and I see the stats. They receive traffic with no content whatsoever. Obviously, if you go on to develop them they get more. I only mention this as I don't know what sort of words/phrase your .com domain is and so I am trying to cover all bases.
I hope this helps.
All the best,
Brandon

Excellently put Brandon, thank you

My exact thoughts Brandon. Just more articulately put lol

BeauAndNik, you may already know of it, but this site provides some interesting information: http://www.dnjournal.com/

You are very welcome. I have been in domains for about 10 years. Without knowing the term/s and the interest they would potentially have for other marketers, it's only possible to offer "general" advice. It also depends on the individual. Being a cautious person, I would naturally tend to want to get the net and the org.
All the best,
Brandon

Buying the extras does help you protect your brand name. How important is that to you now? You can always do it later when you start to get established.

I read a very interesting article today about this subject. After reading it, I can't say that I'm smarter...So, what I think is that if you are in a very good position and you think that this is it... Go for it. If you are not there yet, wait, see what will happen and then decided.

while not 100% necessary it can be great to safe guard your site and brand from others trying to steal traffic from your site.
