The twelfth and final day of Christmas, January 6th, is known in Ireland as Nollaig na mBan translating to Women's Christmas.

On this day, the last day of Christmas, women would, finally, get a much-needed rest after catering to everyone during the festive season. It is said that even God rested on the seventh day, but Irish women didn't stop until the twelfth 😊

This tradition is borne from Celtic times when
an obligatory feast allowed women to have a massive party (without men) to celebrate the feminine energy. They would leave their men folk at home to tend to the household chores and the women would gather at the fairy rings.

There they would dance, drink mead and bless Mother Earth so that the spring would bring forth a good crop.

This once very strong tradition is beginning to see a revival in Ireland again with the modern-day tradition of ladies relaxing after the Christmas holidays and meeting up with their women friends for lunch or dinner all the while celebrating the feminine energy.

The 6th of January is also known by many other names including the 12th day of Christmas, Little Christmas, Epiphany, Three Kings’ day or the Feast of the Epiphany

Wishing you all (especially the women) a very Happy Nollaig na mBan - Jules

Wow, that’s fascinating, I am half Spanish so we celebrate 6 January as Three Kings Day or ‘Spanish’ Christmas. I think from now on we’ll have a shout out to Nollaig na mBan although I’ll need to ask an Irish pal how to say it😉

Hi Jules,
dia de reyes magos

The " day of the 3 wise men" in some Central and South American countries and a public holiday.
Interesting post.

Michael.

I like this idea, Michael of gift-giving, on the 6th and the public holiday, of course, it should be that in Ireland too.

Very interesting. Happy Woman's Christmas!
Joe

Thanks Joe ;-)

Had to chuckle a little Jules, had not heard this one before now but it speaks to a great need; it is about time the women who do much of the work preparing and making ready for Christmas get a break and some much-needed fellowship.
Have a blessed week.
Ray

Amen Raymond, let it be so ;-)
