Do You Practice the MoSCoW Method?

Given we are now 20 days into the new year I expect some of us if not all of us are busy working on our goals for the coming year.

I created my 2020 (1st qtr) long term goals in early November - early I know but given it was my first time to actually write down a set of long term goals, some might say I was late to the party ;-)

I check on them every now and again to see if I'm on track, some I've not done as well as others but I'm not worried as I know adding a second website into the mix was not in the original plan so therefore a little manouerving is required.

With this in mind I have started to apply the MoSCoW method and this allows me to switch things up a little without veering too much off the original plan.

If you are not familiar with it the MoSCoW method is a prioritisation technique used in time management to reach a common understanding on the importance of the delivery of each task or goal set.

In simple terms it means the following;

Must have โ€“ these are critical in order to achieve your objectives and to be successful.

Should have โ€“ also important but not critical in order to achieve your objectives.

Could have โ€“ these are nice to have but not necessary and no negative impact will be felt without.

Wonโ€™t have โ€“ agreed at the outset that not appropriate at this time, these are either dropped or included at a later stage.

Of course, you can apply the MoSCoW method to pretty much anything in life and not just to goals or tasks, that's the beauty of it!

Let me know if you practice this method and how it works for you ~ Jules

Yes, MoSCoW is great for small projects and businesses. Simple and agile.

For larger projects/other-than-startup businesses it becomes more difficult to keep a big picture focus and the line between Must and Should gets moved so many times, you lose track of what is key to the project. Oh, those were the days.

Great stuff, Jules!

Wise words Randall you clearly have knowledge of using it :-) Thanks,Jules

Time management is definitely not one of my strong points so I will have to work on it. I really like this idea of prioritizing tasks in this way!

Thanks for the great tip Jules!

Dave

I hear you Dave, I'm pretty sure 90% of us are pretty terrible at time management. Usually, life has a way of interfering and I expect you would need to be laser focussed to continue on a task without any distractions!

Sometimes the simple approach works, and not beating yourself up helps too ;-) Jules

Never heard of it, Jules, but it's awesome! Thanks for sharing such an interesting thing!

Very welcome Lenka ;-) Jules

That's awesome Jules--right now I'm using the fireman method--busy putting out whichever "fires" need the most water! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž

I hear ya Jeff, I feel like I've been doing a spot of fire-fighting myself these past few weeks since my return to the office after the holidays, it has been non-stop!

No chance to apply this method ;-)

I feel your pain, Jules!๐Ÿ˜Ž

Ha, love it Jeff! I thought you'd be using the 'dog rescue' method given recent posts, but I guess it's good to try something new once and a while. :)

Ha, Randall, well you know--it's seat of my pants most of the time dealing with things. When I plan--that usually all goes out the window--I'm forced to be reactive rather than proactive!๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„

Thatโ€™s a great way to remember
Thanks
Your spot on in the order
