Why You Need A Blog
My daughter has been selling jewellery using Instagram fairly successfully and was looking at setting a storefront using Shopify. After lots of conversation and evaluation she's now setup a site using Wordpress and WooCommerce and I think she's made the right choice.
In fact I think most people should be getting setup with a blog right now for a few reasons. The online world is getting bigger all of the time and it's so important to be plugged into it for both your own business and to keep up with what's happening.
There's so many people out there building their brands and businesses on social media and I've seen alot of frustration with it. At the end of the day you don't own anything on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or YouTube and it's not reasonable to expect those platforms to stay the same and work in the interest of your business.
Facebook alone has a market capitalization of over 550 Billion and with that a significant responsibility to it's shareholders. They offer an awesome platform that stores our memories and entertains us but they are under zero responsibility to build and support our businesses.
It's only reasonable to expect the cost of advertising on any of these platforms to keep creeping up and for the rules and algorythms to keep changing. And to rely on them as one of the main ways to grow your business leaves you very vulnerable.
When you own your blog you're free to publish what you like, what truly suits your brand and you're not subject to social media rules that seem to be carved in ice.
Besides the cost of living is creeping up in a hurry and your overhead to run a wordpress blog with WooCommerce is alot less than renting a Shopify storefront on a monthly basis.
Factor in the awesome content you'll be compelled to create for your fabulous audience and you're going to grow as a content creator and then the sky is the limit!
So now I'm very proud of my awesome daughter, her new website and her creativity in life and her business. After the initial grumblings she's figured it out and her new site is up and running. And she can grow it as much as she wants... the only limits are the ones she sets.

I will say the same as KyleAnn. Had I known how nice it is, most of the time, to have websites and write about what you want I would have started years ago. Crying about spilled milk, I know and I should be happy with what I have created later on in life.

I think what she’s doing is great! Especially if it’s just focused on a theme or line of products or solving some great issue. That way it becomes more and more known for it over time and people coming back to it to stay involved. I’m thinking of having my kids do the same with a special interest of their own.
She's made a great decision. I like also that your own blog can go in any direction you want to take it. The options are indeed, limitless.

You are right, Judy. It's like the old saying, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" (- especially one that you don't have control over). So that when it falls, you'd still have some eggs left.
