Remembering With Respect
Today is Remembrance Day in Canada and to me it's a very important day. My Mom and I attended the service at RVYC and it was particulary poignant as both the Pastor and the Commodore shared stories that included their immediate family. My grandfather served in WW2 so my family has shared in this tradition.
This year there was only one veteran left in attendance and it was humbling to hear his story. They flew into war with a group of 24 in a glider. It's impossible to comprehend the bravery and the sacrifices made by these incredible young men and women all these years ago.
I've seen the number of veterans steadily decline over the years as I've always made time to attend Remembrance Day Services.
It's been encouraging to see so many young people marking Remembrance Day on social media and going out to honor those who served our country.
So often social media can be trivialized and not taken seriously. However as the number of surviving veterans dwindles we can ensure that their memories are kept alive.
We are living in different times now and I think it's important to recognize, encourage and appreciate respectful social media tributes especially from the young. There will come a time when they won't be able to have the privilege to meet our veterans and it's so valuable for them to keep their powerful memories alive.
I'm very grateful to those who have served and also to those who keep important traditions alive even in changing times. These traditions are far too important to fade away.

I love the stories and passions of those older war veterans! They are windows to history!

Oh Judy, what a beautifully poignant picture. Every WW2 veteran have ever had the good fortune to see, wears his medals with pride, he salutes his country and flag as the last post is played. It moves me greatly.
Huge respect
🙏
Thanks for sharing and reminding us of the importance of those who have sacrificed it all for our freedom.
Have a great day
Darren :)
We owe a lot to them, the sacrifice of those men and women. The young ones who are willing to serve now. I am proud of those who served and are serving now.
Thanks for your post,
David
Thanks so much, and yes we really do. Our world would be a very different place without their sacrifices.

Thank you Judy. Your sores move me this morning.
My great uncle was an Admiral in the Royal Navy and a school was named after him in my home town.
My father is an active duty Veteran and long since retired from the RCAF - now 91 years old.
Earlier this year, he gave me his formal service blazer bearing many badges and of course a poppy , which he continued to wear every Nov 11th to Church when he would speak to the congregation about military service and he would read “Flanders Fields”.
SO proud and thankful for his service and the service of all our veterans. May we never forget.
Best wishes to you and your family Judy!

Thanks so much John. There's such a level of pride for all of our veterans and when they are family it's so very close to our hearts.
