What Is and Isn't Working on Facebook Right Now

I read a really insightful article today featuring the well known Facebook expert, Mari Smith.

For those of you who use Facebook you will have no doubt noticed a decrease in the results you are getting from the platform recently.

Well you are not alone!

Here is a brief run down of what Mari says is NOT working on Facebook anymore.

Youtube links - If you find a Youtube video which you want to share on Facebook, basically don't bother if you are using it for interaction or to drive people somewhere. Because YT is a massive competitor of FB there videos are given next to no reach at all! Isn't there a law against that type of thing?!

If you have one of your own videos, load it directly from your PC to FB

Link posts - Basically if you publish a post with a link in it that takes the person away from FB, don't bother!! Buzzsumo ran a test throughout 2018 and analysed 777 million link posts (yes million!) and found that the reach given to link posts was at an all time low.

Memes and Quote graphics - These are not working anymore either! Video posts (especially with the subtitles on them) are outperforming anything else by 73%

So, What IS working on Facebook in 2019?

Mari says that videos are getting the best engagement at the moment, followed by question posts and then photo posts.

Videos are FB's main thrust as they go up against Youtube for viewing time. They have even started a new ad placement for advertisers within video posts. This is because they have run out of real estate for the growing number of advertisers on Facebook.

Question posts work because they get people to think. They hook our mind and cause people to interact. This is what FB wants - to keep us on their platform longer.

Top Tip!

Mari suggests that with video posts, add your link in the first Comment rather than in the body of the post. That way it will not get dragged down by low reach due to a post in the post itself.

Facebook Groups

Facebook has recently come out and stated that it has changed its focus. It 's mission statement was to connect the world. However, now it wants to give people the power to build a community. See the clues?!

Therefore, Facebook Groups are going to be the next big thing with FB adding extra features to their Group platform. It has been suggested that they will be adding a facility for Group owners to add a subscription facility right within FB.

So, there you have it - up to the minute Facebook news.

Hope you found it useful.

Let us know your thoughts to the points in the post

Have a great weekend

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming. Wayne

Some great information herein, thank you for that.

Glad you found it useful

Thanks for this very informative post. I am a newbie and hearing where and how to post is very helpful.

Glad you found it useful Lynn

Which is why I have built a group for WA, and also Pages for several of my websites. I have built pages for several businesses I help regularly, and they get consistent leads from them. Good information Jon.
Bill

Nice one Bill. Thanks for commenting.

Last summer I went to workshops sponsored by Facebook, and even Cheryl Sandburg was there and spoke.. They were going all over the US holding these. It was called Community Boost. It was quite good, and several of the biggest takeaways, was building a community with groups and getting business done with Instagram. PM me and I will send you the url for Facebook blueprint if you have not heard about it.
Take care,
Bill

Thanks, Jon and Debbie:) This was helpful information!
Blessings:)

Thank you! Same to you guys:)

Great Post Jon, however I long stopped posting in FB groups and focus on Twitter and YouTube as they are proven to work much more effectively

Hi Dave, where have you been?! Very quiet !!

Must admit, I am going away from FB more and more. Haven't run ads on there for months.

Have a great weekend. Good luck at Scunthorpe!! You are in touching distance of safety!!

Where have I been?... and Very quiet!!, you are joking
Been busy implementing some great social media strategies, through my marketing system, which bring me leads like its turning on a tap, using and boosting Twitter & YouTube

So been busy with that and also working on my own neat little project linked to WordPress.

As for the weekend, then yes its Scunny away and ideally 3 points to bring back, but myself and anthea have a busy weekend visiting family in Surrey Tomorrow and then I am off to Wembley on Sunday to watch pompey play with some mates

Enjoy your weekend

Awesome, a day at Wembley. Is the marketing system the one you told me about last week? Been up to my neck in stuff so not got around to taking another look yet. I will though.

All the best

Yes it is and it works very well, got a whole ton of leads and some excellent social media tips that ... well just work!

Are you saying that there is no point of sharing our posts from sites at FB business pages with links to our sites?

From what Mari is saying I guess the best way is to put up an image with a bit of copy in the post but add the link in the first Comment box instead.

But I still see the traffic from FB as it was before, apparently no change.

Hey Guys,
Great post, thanks for the insight. I think this is very helpful and confirms my thoughts on this exact issue. I have noticed that the videos definitely reach more people on Facebook, making it a better way to engage and reach more people. The tip about commenting with your link is something I had seen people do, but hadn't tried that yet. Thanks again for the tips, good strategy.

Best regards,
Jefrey M.

Thanks Jefrey. All the best

Interesting comment, the thing with Facebook is, that people scroll, but don't watch.

On other platforms, they engage and it brings people in

Thank you for sharing this valuable info. I’m still new to social media. It seems the rules are always changing. This is definitely something for me to keep in mind as I go forward.

Thanks for commenting Eliza. If you need any help just shout.

Yes very useful I am not into FB big time yet but this update is very good; thanks for taking the time to do it for us. Have yourselves a great weekend also.

Thanks Philip for commenting and have a great weekend yourself.
