You will automatically learn about WP the more you use it. So just by following the training here you will learn a lot.
The paid themes always have more options so that is why many eventually end up buying one and if you end up getting a flexible one you can make it look like you want without learning coding. But it is also possible to have a great site with a free theme. It depends on your priorities.

You can spend time learning to tweak your present WordPress theme... or... you can look for another theme (Gary offered you the BEST tutorial to do that)... or you could even purchase a premium theme that will display your website the way you want it to look, and start earning from affiliate marketing.
In order to learn how to tweak a WordPress theme like you are suggesting, you would need to learn HTML and CSS, and that all takes time.

If you want to learn more than what is in WA I'd suggest going to Udemy. I've done a couple of courses by Andrew Williams (from England). He's a pretty good instructor and the cost is really reasonable. I got them on sale for around 10 or 11 bucks.
