I was wondering if I could choose a niche about travel books/guides for Europe or for America specifically? Is this a narrow enough niche and a potentially lucrative one?

Focusing on books in any niche, while interesting, probably won't be lucrative because the commissions are so low (what's the average cost of a book, $15-$20?). You'd need a MASSIVE amount of traffic to pull that off. It's far easier to choose products that cost $100 or more to achieve your financial goals with the same amount of work. This isn't to say you shouldn't promote books on your site, just not making them your main focus.
