Trying To Improve My Dogs Weight Issues

Hi All WA friends,

After a routine visit to the vets a few months ago with our 2 rottweiler rescues, a full health check was given. Our vet said Jess, our lovely old 11 year old needs to lose weight which can be the cause of her panting most of the time and not good for her heart..

She weighed in at 51.8kg, our vet said she wants to get Jess down to 40kg. My wife and I think that this target is unfair because Jess is a big built rottweiler, anyway we started to cut out treats and snacks which she was not happy about. This is Jess below.

At bedtime they always had a treat each, dogs are very clever and know the routine, all 3 of them sat staring at the treat cupboard, with sad eyes. After being put on a Hills weight loss dog food recommended by our vet dietitian, we gave it a go.

On my first return visit to the vet dietitian, Jess weighed in at 50kg we were really chuffed for her, next visit she was 48.9kg and her latest visit to the vet dietitian, Jess weighed in at "drum roll please" 47.5kg. We are so proud of Jess losing all this weight in a short space of time because she will eat anything, all day and night if she could.

With Luna our 4 year old rescue rottie, she is being put through all the same process as Jess above. Her starting weight was 37.2kg, the vet wanting to get her down to 30kg which we also think is way too low for her. Here below is our beautiful long haired Luna.

Luna is very fussy with her food, so she was put on Royal Canine Satiety weight control dog food, thankfully she likes it. We tried Luna on Jess's weight loss food from Hills but wouldn't eat it. But now we have Kass our new rescue rottie, Luna has decided she loves the weight loss food Jess and Kass both eat, how do you work that one out.

Her first return visit to the vet dietician, Luna weighed in at 37kg so minimal weight loss. The next visit her weight was 36.4kg, the most recent visit Luna weighed in at 35.3kg. We are really pleased for her as she is not as big build as Jess. Next visit for them both is end of this month.

Really hope you are having a relaxing weekend and enjoying whatever you planned on doing this weekend.

Thank you,

It must be tough on them when you cut down on their food and snacks. Lovely dogs.

Hi Achuthan,

Yes I am their worst enemy when they see how much is in their dog bowls. But it is all to keep them healthy, pity they don't understand.

Thank you,

John

Thanks for sharing John. You have some real nice dogs.

Thank you, Eric.

They have a lovely temperament.

Look! Puppies!

Hi John,

Thank you, they are very friendly.

We were Basset hound breeders. Some new owners were giving their dogs the wrong treats because they did not realized they were being conned. If you have to give them a treat then give them grated carrot, not a full carrot as it will take to long to digest a full one. It must be grated. They will stay full longer and not put on weight.

Thank you, Tom.

Our vet did mention grated carrot and giving them less dog food at meal times. Then use the dog food bits as treats.

John

Your dogs are adorable!

Thank you, Jessica.

I wouldn't be without any of them.

John
