News We Didn't Want About Jess

Hi All,

Jess, our old girly rescue rottweiler had her toe nail and the quick cut back a week ago, she was limping and in pain. The vet who did the surgery said he found an infection in the toe bone that was eating away at the bone. He sent off a sample for analysis.

I had a fixed appointment this afternoon, made by the vet to see how her surgery wound was healing, he was happy with it and said she can go for walks again. Jess will be pleased, when I take the other 2 rotties I have and leave her behind, she gives me those sad eyes !!!!!

While having the consultation with the vet, he said the sample results had returned. The vet could only send a small sample off, a couple of weeks ago, he wasn't sure if it was too small to analyse.

Anyway, although not 100% they think it is bone cancer, the worst news we could receive. If we don't do anything about it, the cancer will spread to her lungs etc we were told.

So to give Jess who is 11 years old now, quite old for a rottweiler, a quality of life in the time she has left the vet is going to amputate the toe. The vet said this was the only decision we could make.

Hopefully the cancer infection is only in her toe bone and not spread anywhere else, Jess had x-rays of her stomach, when she had the initial surgery and they were clear.

The poor girl is going back in for her surgery next Thursday morning, the vet will send the bone sample off for analysis. With this proper size infected bone sample, we will know for sure what is eating her toe bone away.

We are praying that the infection is only in her toe and by having it amputated, can halt the spread. But with cancer you never know, as our vet says he could take further x-rays next week and find it elsewhere.

Thank you,

John

Hope it is good news John.

Hi Tom,

It is the waiting and not knowing which is difficult.

John

Oh yes, unfortunately I know even too well how devastating it is to receive such news. We'll be thinking of you all, John, and of little Jess. Well really really pray that the nasty cancer has not spread xxx

Giulia

Thank you, Giulia.

Just want it to be all over, I feel so sorry for Jess. Waiting for the bone analysis and wondering if it has spread is going to feel like ages.

John

Oh no. That is so frustrating for you and saddening! I really hope this will be the end of it and stop the infection and you get good news.

Thank you, Jessica.

The best I can hope for, as you have said after the amputation of the toe the infection has been stopped. But I don't usually receive good news, whatever happens Jess will get looked after like a queen.

John

Yes, I am sure of that! You take such good care of your dogs!!

Awww poor Jess, sorry to hear that John and will keep my fingers crossed that she wont need any more than the toe amputation. xx

Thank you, Cheryl.

It is the best we can hope for in toe amputation, need to wait for the analysis on the infected bone to confirm what is eating it.

John

Aawww. Poor Jess. I will pray for her. Sorry John. I know how much you love her. ❤️

Thank you, Jean.

It is very sad for her, she loves everybody and expects you to stroke her. The next few weeks is decision time, waiting for the results on the infected bone is a worrying time.
Whatever the result Jess will well looked after.

John

Aaawww. She sounds like such a sweetheart. Praying for the best Ossining outcome.

Praying that it doesn't spread John. They can adapt to 3 legs. I hope you have many more good years ahead!

We had a previous rottie, where we had his leg amputated because of bone cancer.
He adapted well on 3 legs, I am hoping it doesn't come to that.

John

So sorry...praying for good news and that it has not spread and won't spread. I had a cat with mouth cancer. It was very sad.

Hi Linda,

Cancer takes no prisoners, I hope Jess has the best outcome possible. She is the most placid dog I have ever had, she loves everybody.

John

Ouch! Poor baby and sad for you! I hope the best outcome. Please keep us posted, Lynne

Thank you, Lynne.

It is a waiting game now, after her op next week we may need to wait for another 3 weeks for the results on the toe bone analysis.
Will keep you posted.

John

I am so very sorry to hear that! :( That's tough to see when it comes to our pets! My thoughts are with you and your beautiful dog!

Thank you, Terry.

I hope this is not the beginning of Jess becoming poorly, she is the most placid dog I have ever owned.
If she met you, she would cuddle up and expect you to stroke her, eventually she goes to sleep on the sofa.

John

awww..she sounds like such a doll!! :)

I'm so sorry

Hugz

Thank you, Sunday.

She loves everybody, when going into our vets Jess goes straight to reception, 2 feet on the counter for a pet by the ladies.

John

if more people know how to love like dogs, this world would be heaven. Give Jrss and hug, and please keep me informed
