Jess Our Old Rottweiler Has Surgery

Hi All WA friends,

My 3 rescue rottweilers love their walk every day, on Saturday morning my wife who is getting stronger with her leg everyday, came with me and would walk old Jess.

I walked the younger other 2 as my wife's leg is not strong enough for these 2 excitable rotties. Before we took them out, Jess was nibbling at her right front paw. On this paw she has an abnormal long nail, which we have been trimming with nail cutters.

On the walk Jess was limping, so returning home we found that this abnormally long nail was hollow inside, but also had an hairline crack along the whole length. Luckily our vet practice answered the phone, they are only open till lunchtime on a Saturday..

They told us to bring Jess to the vet practice immediately, it is about 30 minutes drive from where we live, the vets practice would remain open for us. I stayed home with Luna and Kass, my wife took Jess to the vets. She returned without Jess who was going to need surgery Saturday afternoon.

The vet squeezed the nail where Jess cried out in pain, the vet told my wife what he did should not hurt at all.

The vet was already performing surgeries on Saturday afternoon, Jess was number 4 in line. After being put under, she had x-rays taken, her nail was completely removed and for the squeamish of you, the vet cut her quick away also.

Worryingly the vet found that an infection was eating her toe bone away, he has sent a sample away for analysis. If it is cancer, Jess's toe bone will have to be amputated.

She is nearly 11 years old and not long had lumps removed that were not cancerous. The x-rays she had on Saturday, found no further evidence of any signs of cancer which is a relief.

Saturday afternoon cost us £500.00 in vet fee's, but if it gets Jess out of pain then money well spent. Just got to wait 2 weeks now and hope the analysis sample returns in Jess's favour.

How is your week going ?? If you have any pets I hope they are in good health.

Thank you,

Poor Jess, sorry to hear that John and hope her samples come back clear and not showing anything bad. I hope she is now recovering and you are spoiling her.

We got Jake clipped today as he looked like a wee furry man and couldn't see as he has a fringe that droops in his eyes when his fur gets longer. Our wee cat Tootsie is fine and so is Jake, they enjoy each other's company and love to play chase with each other. xx

Hi Cheryl,

Jess is out of pain now, bandages are off but she has to wear a cone on her head. I took it off her once and found her licking her wound, so unless having her food the cone is back on. She always gets spoiled with treats etc, the same as the other 2 of my rotties.
I hope Jake is enjoying his new appearance and glad your cat is fine.
Just need to wait for the test results for Jess now.

John

That's good to hear John, they can be devils though. As I said before though hope the results come back ok. Xx

John, I've been meaning to ask about Jess' other lump as I must have missed your post about it. I'm glad to hear that was clear, but I'm so sorry to hear she had to have yet again another surgery. Is she back home now? Is she still in post op pain? You are right, every time that something bigger happens with our dogs, it's big money leaving our purse, which sets us right back. Yet, so long as our Childen are better, it somehow just doesn't matter. The love these little 'uns give us is beyond measure xxx

Giulia

Hi Giulia,

Jess is back home, with a cone on her head, I gave her the benefit of the doubt one night and left her cone off her head. But I heard lick, lick, lick, so cone back on. The vet took her bandages off her paw, he wants the fresh air to dry the wound so it will scab over. Jess is on pain killers and seems really well, she is not lame anymore.
Just need to wait for the results on the bone eating infection. Jess and Luna are back at the vets tomorrow with their monthly weight check. I am afraid we have been spoiling them with nice treats and food lately, so the vet wont be pleased.
Hope Indy is doing well, your lovely companion.

John

Nice story and I hope Jess is out of danger. Am excited to hear your wife is strong now and she can take Jess to the vet.

Thank you, Paul.

My wife's leg is getting stronger and Jess is much happier, not limping anymore. Just need to wait for the results on the infection eating away at her toe bone.

John

I hope Jess

I know what your going through as I am going through the same with one of my dogs at the moment but sadly there's nothing that can be done for mine

They're part of the family at the end of the day.

She's a beautiful dog!

Thank you, Darren.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog, we just hope these situations never arrive. You are right we will do anything for our dogs.
Good luck !!

John

I do hope your Jess is going to be ok. I do love my dog. Sadly I lost my star to cancer and it broke my heart. She was such an intelligent dog.

Wasted on me really because her potential could have been so much more she was that clever, I do however have her son my Frankie.

He is also a big beast and a beauty but not as clever as his ma. I decided after he lost his appetite and got an infection In his ear to give a different approach and gave him something the Egyptians believed in. Hes coming along fine. I love my woofagee (dog) I loved his ma Star too.

So I do hope your Jess will be ok. Sending you all hugs and love
Regards Debs

Thank you, Debs.

I have lost 2 of my rottweilers to cancer, I was off work for a few days it hits you that hard. We will always love them even when they have gone over the rainbow bridge.

John

Oh I really hope she is all ok! I know your doggies mean the world to you!

I am sick (still I guess, different symptoms of a flu for weeks now).

My kitties are ok but all need their vet check ups. I am trying some new supplements on them as well to hopefully eliminate the need for drugs. My vet really likes the supplements I have them on so far.

Flu, not nice Jessica, especially during the summer. I hope your kitties check ups bring no surprises.

John

We do as much for our black labs john. Glad i's resolved!

Thank's Mike.

If any of your black labs are in pain, you would do anything to help them.

John
