Test the links!
How often do you do it?
- If you're like me, not enough!
- I began clicking on some of my links and found they were no longer working!
- Not only is it embarrassing, it can lead to serious trouble.
- What if the Big G checks them, will they index that post?
- Better safe than sorry, check them at least once a week.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link!
- A lot has been written about back links.. Should you or shouldn't you?
- Those need to be checked even more often!
- Make sure your links are going where they should go!
- Could someone hack your site and send your links to a porn site or worse?
- I read a post that said you can have up to 100 links!
- Ya think? That's about 97 too many for me!
- Try to limit links to about 3 or 4 per post.
- If you have other related posts, you can link them and that's great.
When it comes to links, don't follow Mae West's advice:
"Too much of a good thing can be wonderful"!

There have been a few articles over recent weeks in regard to backlinks and 404 errors.
I'm sure there's software out there that checks yours links and any are broken, it sends them to a page of your choice automatically.
Still, as you say, it pays to check them yourself regularly.

I am notoriously complacent about checking links or maybe just too forgetful. But this is an excellent point that we all should be doing.
Thanks for sharing. Most of my articles have about 2-3 links. On most topics, Wikipedia is ranked near the top and they have many links (never counted them) but have to be 50-100 links in one article.

Good advice, Joe. Too many links just looks spammy to me. Keeping on top of even a few links can be a challenge. Think of it-- 100 posts with only 3 each...that's a lot of checking.
When I was updating some older sites, I asked my kids to help. They love clicking away and making notes about the problems so I can go back and fix them.
I might need to do that again soon!

It does no good to have a site up and running not knowing all the time the links had no value

There is a free broken link checker plugin. It does thechecking for you and advises if there are any. You just hover over the tools tab on the left hand sidebar of the dashboard and it will say if any found. Sometimes it does give a false broken but you can check and if ok just tell the tool link ok.
This is the one I use.
