Pushing the envelope

Showing my age...

I was in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until 1961. I was the crew chief on the P-51 Mustang, the airplane on the top of the photo. That was about the fastest plane in my day, but it had limits. Try as we might, we could not break those limits.

The airplane beneath the P-51 is the latest in technology and stealth, words we never heard of in my Air Force days. Today, the F - 35, pictured below the P-51 breaks every limit you can imagine. That's called "pushing the envelope", trying to see how fast, how high, how much an airplane can do.

There's a relationship here to Wealthy Affiliate.

Here the only limits are YOU!

  • Is there a limit to how much money you can make? NO.
  • Is there a limit to how many websites you can have? 25...go ahead...try it!
  • Are there limits to how many posts you can write for your websites? Only you!
  • Can you reach the limit on blogs you do at WA? Try it.

You see, you are the only limiting factor here. You may be limited by your time, your job, your family, your education, your health, your money...but those are YOUR limits and you can change all or at least, most of them.

"We still do not know one thousandth of one percent of what nature has revealed to us".

Albert Einstein

"The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible".

Arthur C. Clarke

Is there a limit to the number of members we can have at WA? I think Kyle and Carson would say... I hope not! Why not push that limit, if there is one.

Remember just one thing from this post...push the envelope and that envelope is you!

I dare you!

Joe

Yes. I push myself. I have many distractions so I have to

    Keep it up.

Hi I agree with you John, Joe this is a great post to start the day, have a great one .

Great post to start the day Joe - thank you!

    Thanks John

Interesting post, Joe. Never thought of myself as a plane before, but it is a good analogy. Learning something new, going beyond what we know today, pushing beyond our comfort zone, is a daily challenge. I can't imagine staying in the same place that I am today. So, we soar.

Soar Barbara...soar! You can do it...push the throttle to the limit.
    Joe

You're exactly right, Joe--the sky is the limit, but as you mentioned, there are limitations that we must balance into our pushing of the envelope, namely Life to put all you said into a tiny little package. Nevertheless, thanks for the motivation to push the envelope!

    Jeff

    Thanks Jeff.

You're 'Pushing the envelope' when it comes to awesome posts, Joe.
Interestingly, the phrase has its roots in mathematics. Much prefer it in it's current guise.

So true Twack. I found it interesting that the Brits developed the engine that was used in the Mustang, using it in the Spitfire, the Halifax and the Mosquito. Rolls Royce developed it and Packard and Allison developed it in the US under the Rolls pattern.
As you know, it has been said that the British and Americans have everything in common except the language!
Have a great day, what’s left of it.
    Joe

That 'language' comment made me smile.
I looked at the figures you gave for the V12 at 1750hp, it's made me think that the design must have been pretty special and have huge cubic capacity. The V12 sat outside under a sheet managed just under 300 when new, which was twenty years after the Roll Royce engine.

Actually a senior moment. It was 1750 c with 1390 hp in the 51. There were several versions that varied between 1280 hp to 1690 hp. Didn't Jag make a v12? Mine were the V6s

Yes they did, that's the one sat outside. 5.3Litre V12. When Ford took over in 1990 they all went by the wayside. By 97' they were all V8's and then down to the V6's. Although that's progress. In 92 they put a V6 Twin turbo in the XJ220 and that produced 542bhp, so it wasn't all bad.

My two were the XJ6. Loved ‘em.

I like this one...and thanks. I am reminded of Oscar Wilde's quote: "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."

    Great quote.
    Thanks

Great post. Thank you for challenging the community to go beyond our present limits.

Great post to start my day! Thanks and have a great day!

    Thanks

Hearing a P-51 take off was one of the most awesome sounds I have heard in my life. Did you serve in tke Korean war?

No, I came in just after it in 1955. That was one super engine in the P-51... a Rolls Royce 12 cylinder, 1750 hp power plant.
    Thanks
    Joe

    How fast did that go?
