Handling an emergency!

No this is not just about the corona virus!

As pilots, we are trained, retrained and trained again and again to handle emergencies in an airplane. We spend hours in real time and simulators, training for every imaginable thing that can go wrong in an airplane, and believe me, they can and do go wrong!

Pilots are drilled to follow 3 things in an emergency:

  1. Aviate - get the airplane under control. If an engine fails, shut it down. Shut off the fuel to it. Put out the fire if there is one. Feather the prop to keep it from turning and causing drag Trim the airplane to fly without pressure on the rudder.
  2. Navigate - know where you are and where you're going to put this beast real soon!
  3. Communicate - when you have the other two under control, let the people on the ground know what's happening so they can help you if you need fire engines, ambulances, clear the airspace for you or whatever they can do for you.

Okay fly boy... let me see you turn n this around to help me!

We either have an emergency or an opportunity!

  • Everything depends on how you handle it.
  • Many of us are stuck at home because of the virus.
  • Some of us are laid off from our jobs.
  • We have been searching for a niche.

Turn an emergency into an opportunity!

  • I don't mean take advantage of people with price gouging, etc... that's wrong!
  • Use the time you are home to work your website and learn more thru the lessons.
  • Find a niche and products that will HELP people during this time.
  • Organize yourself to be more efficient... lean and mean!

Fly the airplane... get your life under control... don't panic... keep a clear head and act responsibly.

Yes, we could have an emergency, but we have turned it in to an opportunity!

H Joe,

You are absolutely right Joe! it is great when we can turn an emergency into an opportunity. Everything happens in our lives for a reason. So we have to look for the lesson in every situation good or bad. Thanks for the great reminder!

Wishing you the very best!

Kind regards,
Nichola

Thanks Nichola.
You too.

You are welcome. Thank you!

What we're in is a kinda slow-moving emergency. That seems kind of unreal. I've had a night engine failure at 1000 ft AGL in my helicopter, and it was the only engine I had!
Fortunately, it came out all right, as you can tell because I'm here and able to write this reply to your post. :-)
Grant.

Thanks Grant.
My chopper engine failure fortunately was in the day. In a cow pasture in England!

Yes, you have inspired me here and you are correct; we need to act responsibly and wear our N95 masks in public and not worry what others think - same as our blogs, now we have time to put all our energies into making them what we want and who cares what some may think, the ones that really need it will appreciate it most and respect your hard work.

Here is too a new opportunity for all of us! Be safe!!

Thanks. You too.
Joe

When my son was in college in economics they where going over the FIFO & LIFO concept. Someone ask the question of what is it called when a gas station gets a delivery and raises its prices that day. The Professor responded that is called KNIFO. The people that are gouging should be shut down. Very good post Joe.

Hi Joe,

A great lesson here. Yes there is an emergency where we need to use the training to adapt and conquer.

Staying clam in rough waters or turbulent weather, is the only way we are going to get ahead here. Panic equals disaster in a lot of cases.

Great post. Thank you for the share.

Best wishes,
Michael

Thanks Michael.
