Are you Afraid?
Many of us start our lives as youngsters afraid of something.
Why are children afraid of the dark?
I can remember being afraid of the dark as a young boy. We had a big family and there wasn't enough room in our house for all of us to live comfortably. My father had built a large packing shed behind our house that he no longer used .
It was a 'Left over' from the days he tried to grow tulips in Australia.
He made the decision to convert that packing shed into three bedrooms, to house the three boys in our family. When it came time to move into our new dwelling I can remember not being very happy, It seemed an awful long way from the house.
In reality, it was only about seven meters from the back door.
In any case, my first night in this building scared the life out of me. To make matters worse there was a full moon that night and mum hadn't added any curtains as yet. I hid under the sheets all night.
It was a scary proposition for a young boy to be so far away from his parents. My older brothers were no help as they seemed oblivious to everything.
That was the first time I was actually scared of the dark.
Then the years went by and I got married and my wife and I had a child of our own. I was determined that she would not experience what I did and I made nighttime as much fun as I possibly could for her.
During the first five years of her life the dark meant nothing. She was not afraid of anything.
Then something happened to change all this.
A well-meaning family member was baby sitting her one night and our daughter decided to play up. Being an only child she was a bit spoilt. As punishment for misbehaving the family member made her sit in the corner of a dark room and shut the door.
Well.. From then on she became afraid of the dark.
The moral to this story is.
We can be conditioned to become afraid.
Much of this fear can manifest itself into everyday life when we become adults.
It may simply be something as basic as being afraid to take our first driving lesson, or being afraid to start our first job.
With some people it can become a lot worse.
We can become afraid to try anything new or to take the plunge in any new venture. We hold back making major decisions and our progress through life is stifled.
We never quite make it to the top.
Which brings me to the reason for this blog.
A quote by a great man that reads as follows.
"Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear". George Addair

Thank you for this post Jim. I've actually had a fear of the dark all my life and have no recollection how it started. Even now as an adult I can't sleep unless there is a night light. I don't let fear hold me back with my online business though :) Best wishes. Kathy
Fear can stop us in so much ways.
It's finding a way to ignore it and move forward that can be a challenge.
Positive feedback and telling ourselves good stories can help.
Thanks for sharing Jim.

Awesome post, Jim! For me, it's all of the above. Afraid to fail. Afraid to succeed. Afraid that I'm not good enough. Feel like a fraud and I'll get found out. Feeling like I don't deserve success. working hard to get past all of those. Thank you for sharing this!
Christine
You can get past them all Christine. As a fan of your blogs I really don't think you need to be afraid. You're a very clever person. Jim
What a great post! I needed that today. Had some adversity and felt like I wanted to quit, it seems like things go right for a little while and then I run into a major problem. But thanks to your post, I'll keep on working to win this over. Thanks again, Deanna

We as Humans imagine all kinds of horrible events that can overcome us, the most powerful nation on earth is the imagination we need to get out of our own heads and focus on the facts/reality of things.
Very true.
