I struggle with the verbs. In school I had to really study hard but never really learning enough.

Look over at my blogs on Verbs. DO NOT USE TENSES, Think time in a timeline like I drew. Let's do a difficult time one.
___________/_____________ | ________________
{I have been}
(He has studied)
In my timeline, the X is a definite time, the indefinite is / and the | is now The "ing" words look like this: was/were === is, am == = go===to walk, .So the ing is now, future or past.
Above says the past is not a sure time. / because you can not put a definite time to it, such as yesterday, at two o'clock
If I put ENTER on the computer here, you can still draw the timeline. In the middle is the | meaning now. Anywhere on the timeline going to the left of now is past, anywhere to the right of | now, is future. so somewhere on left of | on the timeline, put /
Another TIME GO slowly and understand each part I write. The other blogs cover the easy timelines.
Again the past. Very difficult time wise.
___________/=== ___/_______ X (when)______ | _________
When I came (X) home last night, what had you been doing? This time frame is the next day and it was now.
Let us put a time. When I came home- now or today i am talking about a definite time X but doing something not a sure time. I think in time.
I had been working on the computer, when you came home. The only sure time is "came". Had been working is not a sure time, but doing or had been work=== is not a sure time.
Let's try an easier one. __/===________ | _______
1. I HAVE been working.
2. I WAS working___________X===___________|____
3. I HAD been working. ___/===_________X____|_________
1. TIME {sometime in the past, you are doing sometime -not sure time.} /==
2. TIME sure time X Last night doing something ==7:00 working
3. Sure time past. When I came home--last night at 11:00
Answer: / {sometime in the past, I stopped what I was doing, but the question is asking BEFORE YOU STOPPED. BEFORE I CAME HOME, HAD BEEN WORKING--{ 7:00 yesterday working--then 3:00 stopped working. Mom came home at 11:00 last night.

It doesn't matter HOW you make your timeline or the symbols, Just make your own, but remember you place it Before now, and now, and After now. Also the have the bzzz words (is am are been was were and then the Regular words. work=== (now)
work/works |||||(every day or every 3:00 or every morning) or change eat./eats; Past worked is an X meaning a sure time (last night, yesterday, 3:00)
The bzzzzworking have been working and had been working and was/were working (both a time in the past that is not sure, but doing something.
Hope this helps. Judy

It takes awhile to get used to this. I am now going to be doing all the past Time words. Anytime you or anyone would like an edit, let me know. And when I edit, I will try to show you or others a fun way not to forget. Thanks
