Eq or iq?
Hey Friends,
Today I was reading "Emotional Intelligence" by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. This book was recommended none other than Jay, in one of his WAbinar. The central theme of the book is the importance of having good Emotional Intelligence(EI).
The book also have a chapter stating importance of having EI over Intelligence quotient(IQ). Very interesting findings and some Aha moments for me.
So how it is related to business?
How much of an impact does EQ have on your Professional Success? The short answer is : A Lot!
- EQ is so critical to success that it accounts for 58 percent of performance in all types of jobs.
- The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increases in EQ adds $1,300 to an annual salary.
These findings hold true for people in all industries, at all levels, in every region of the world.
Emotional Quotient(EQ) is the foundation for a host of critical skills.
These skills include:
- Decision Making
- Time Management
- Change Tolerance
- Assertiveness
- Empathy
- Communication
- Stress Tolerace
- Presentation Skills
- Social Skills
- Anger Management
- Customer Service
- Accountability
- Trust
- Flexibility
The author has given many ways to tackle with it and how to increase our ability to hold all these skills.
Travis has divided EQ in two broad forms Personal Competence and Social Competence.
Personal Competence is further categorized into Self Awareness & Self Management
Social Competence is divided into Social Awareness & Social Management.
In Self Management, the author have some really great suggestions. I instantly relate to these suggestions, as for years I wok as a Yoga & Reiki Teacher, but the author has given an altogether perspective from a scientific view. That's why I am finding it so interesting.
1. Breathe Right
Now we hear this all the time and we all know how breathing right is important. Many a time we breathe very shallow, and we never notice it how adversely it can affect us.
It can lead us to poor concentration, forgetfulness, mood swings, restlessness, depressed and anxious thoughts and a lack of energy. Shallow breathing handicaps your ability to self-manage.
Why it is so?
"Your brain demands a full 20 percent of your body's oxygen supply, which it needs to control basic functions like breathing and sight and complex functions like thinking and managing your mood. Your brain dedicates Oxygen first to the basic functions, because they keep you alive.
Watch this Correct Way to Breath In
2. Smile and Laugh More
Did you know that when you laugh and smile, your face sends signals to your brain that you are happy? Your brain literally sends signals to your brain that you are happy.
So how does this relate to Self Management?
Author says use smiling and laughter to lift your mood by watching a show or reading a book that you know you find funny. This can feel like an odd choice when you are feeling down, but it's a great way to override the negative emotions and clear your head.
I think to start with, these are the two best techniques. Will you practice it daily and how important is Emotional Quotient for you?

Thank you for such a wonderful post.
I would like to add one more to your list that is LQ!
LQ is the quotient of love. Being spreading love and helping others to become better, we spread love to the world so that everyone's life becomes better.
Cheers and have a wonderful day!

Hi, Shubaangi.

I am not practicing first one - breath right and will work on it.
The second one is part of my nature.
Thanks for the Reminder Call.
