Today in history, 1956, An Wang sold his core memory patent to IBM for $500,000. The price tag was low because the magnetic core was used for 20 years before something new was invented. In the mid 1970's, the magnetic core memory was replaced by integrated transistor based semiconductor RAM. Semiconductors are also known as a computer chip or integrated circuit.

Was The Change To A Computer Chip Good?

Yes, in some ways it was good, but in other ways it was not. The magnetic core magnetic core does not lose data when the power goes off. But semiconductor RAM, chips do. So why change then? Because semiconductor memory is faster, more economical, smaller in size and lighter.

So What Does This Have To Do With Your Computer?

Today your computer’s main memory has two main types of RAM: Dynamic RAM (DRAM) and Static RAM (SRAM).

DRAM is widely used as the computer's main memory. DRAM memory cells are made of transistors. This memory is for the data or program code needed by a computer processor to function. .

SRAM is static RAM, which does not have to be refreshed. Although SRAM is faster than DRAM, it uses more transistors which makes it more costly. It is used primarily for computer CPU internal registers and cache memory.

It’s The RAM Size That Is Important

The most common RAM size found in an everyday laptop (PCs) nowadays is 8GB. Some lower-end models come with 4GB and in some cases only 2GB. Higher-end mainstream laptop models oftentimes feature 12GB and 16GB.

RAM is important because applications require it. The amount of ram that is required by an application is determined by the amount of processes it has to run. 8GB is the most common configuration in 2021.

8GB is considered excellent for Windows and MacOS systems. It's good for entry-level gaming, too. If your lap top has 16GB you are set for heavy gaming and streaming.

Do You Know Your Computers RAM Size? You Can Find Out Now

If you are using Windows10, open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab. Select memory from the column on the left, and look at the very top right. It will tell you how much RAM you have and what type it is.

If you have a Mac, click on the Apple symbol in the top left corner of your screen. Then select About This Mac from the menu that appears. This will show the installed version of MacOS, the model name, and the amount of Memory (RAM).

Does You Computer Have 8GB?

Be glad if you have 8GB or more. Your laptop is high performing for an online business. If you have less and you are a multitasker you may be challenged.

Let's Hope Your Computer Speed Aids Your Online Business Well Today.

Thanks George for sharing this information, I was curious about my RAM since I have window 10, and I just cleaned up my computer since it was running quite slow, but my computer is not an up to date one, I do (ctrl shift esc) to get to Task master or manager and all the other step, to discover my RAM is only 4.0, that is very low. So I will have to look into getting a more up to day desktop in the near future.

Great informations you are sharing George.

Elizabeth.

So glad it was helpful. Let's hope for a lot of affiliate sales for you so you can get an updated computer.

Cheers!

You got it George, that is what I am hoping for, but to be honest, I haven't done all the work needed to see that result.

Thanks for kind words.

Elizabeth

Thanks for the RAM information. Useful once again. Did the check and have 4 GB of installed RAM on a 64 bit operating system using Windows10. Should I consider an upgrade?

If you are OK with the speed you are fine. I see you are funning 64 bit so that improves the speed.

When you get frustrated because the speed is slowing you down then it is time to go for the 8GB.

Additional excellent information, George!

Jeff

Did you computer pass the 8GB test?

Yes, George!

Great. Ours did too.

😎👍👍

Very helpful post, George! Years ago I would struggle between the concept of RAM vs Hard Drive space - especially years ago when the only way to install a program was off a floppy disks or compact discs. I would always look at the requirements and ask myself 'Do I have enough space?'

Isaiah 😊

Glad it was helpful. Agreed when computers were so new things were much more confusing. Oh yes! I well remember the days of floppy disks too and the need to keep them in a safe, memorable place.

Will have to take your word and Jim's on this one

Thanks for commenting.
Have a great day.
