Feb. 26 Computer Speed Wins And Stick With Your Passion
On this day in history 1996, Silicon Graphics Incorporated buys Cray Research for $767 million. The low price tag was due to Cray’s need to file bankruptcy.
A Mastermind With A Passion
The Cray Computer Corporation was incorporated in 1989 because its mastermind saw success with the Cray Y-MP, the super computer capable of 2.67 billion calculations per second. This was significant for defense, meteorological, and scientific investigations during the Cold War.
Cray’s passion for utilizing his 40 years of engineering and architect experience, kept him motivated to keep building. And he was totally immersed in his work. He knew every transistor and every wire in his computers.
As long as there was a demand he kept making the super computer faster and better which led to the Cray X-MP, Cray 1 and Cray 2. For decades he held the title of building the fasters computers in the world. Unfortunately as the post-Cold War era emerged the demand for supercomputers fell and in 1995 he was forced to file bankruptcy.
Things Change
Cray Research Inc. has changed hands more than once. In 2000 the Tera Computer Company purchased the Cray Research from SGI. In 2019 Hewlett Packard Enterprise purchase Tera Computer Company for $1.3 billion.
Today the title of the fastest supercomputer is held by Fugaku. It was jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu, Japan. Imagine! It performs over 442 quadrillion computations per second,
