The Younger Generation Makes A Difference

Things may start slow but momentum builds. And you don’t have to be classified as an adult to make a difference. At the age of 13 Jonathan Young cofounded the Boston Computer Society in his high school library. The group was determined to demystify personal computers. Their early topics of discussion included Community Use of Personal Computers and Taking a Minicomputer to the Racetrack.

The group started small with only four in attendance, but eventually the BCS became the world’s largest personal computer user organization with more than 32,000 members from all 50 states in the US and 40 other countries. The group was very active from February 12, 1977 through September 10, 1996.

Even Steve Jobs became active in the group and presented his NeXT Computer System in 1988, after he was forced out of Apple in 1985, but was later rehired by Apple. Coincidentally the BCS started in a high school library and the NeXT Computer system was aimed to help the higher education market. Image the price tag of US $6,500 (equivalent to $14,100 in 2019).

So Vision And Effort Do Make A Difference

Jonathan Rotenberg demonstrated determination at an early age to make a difference. He is still doing that. Today he is a management consultant and executive coach working with senior leaders of global companies helping them become more customer-centric.

We all know Steve Jobs as a pioneer of the personal computer era. He founded Apple Inc. in 1976 and transformed the company into a world leader in telecommunications. He oversaw the launch of such revolutionary products as the iPod and the iPhone. Unfortunately Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor in 2003 and died of respiratory arrest related to the tumor at age 56; however his work has forever made a difference in our technology revolution.

Very interesting post. That helps to solidify the vision.

Glad you found this interesting and helpful.

Interesting. While everyone knows Steve Jobs, I had never heard of Jonathan Young. I certainly remember the days BEFORE computers existed and I can say I'm CERTAINLY glad we have them today.

I am learning a lot myself as I do research for the blogs.

My vision is to promote my books and my physical businesses online, George! Great info on the early days of computing, my friend!

How about 3 small to medium successes a week. My last blog got indexed by google. Success.

Not sure what you are saying.

In 1980 my family & I were living in the Silicon Valley area and working in the same. We were there when the Macintosh Computer was introduced. My son was a quest member invitee to a local computer club at Livermore Labs the location where the some of the movie Tron was made. It was an exciting time to witness what was going on. We bought our kids an Apple 16K computer that gave them a start with a vision of what the computer could do.

What wonderful memories - something to be treasured for a lifetime. A very unique opportunity.

Thanks so much for sharing.
