if you could number it from...1=being the most important step, through to No.5

Hi Jeza,, tough question to do in 5 vital functions as there are so many things that are necessary, and a lot of it depends on what you are trying to do, is it a blog, eCommerce, affiliate site, business site, what type of business etc these all have different requirements.

I reckon you can ask dozens of people and get a different answer.

Make sure you have the following right first:

A domain that suits your product, one with keywords would be good

A reliable hosting company that has very good up time 99.9% and the tools that you need to operate your site, i.e. cPanel etc.

Good content, the whole project is useless unless you have good original content to attract and keep visitors on and returning to your site.

A versatile theme and it must be responsive these days to ensure it works well on mobile devices.

SEO, set up your site for SEO, to attract attention from search engines.

All of the above you must have in place first.
There are heaps more things that you do, the above is a good start.

All the best
