Where is the Manx Pirate?
I don’t know, do you know where he is?
We have an ongoing fun dialogue that has organically developed between myself and two very cool members here about where the “Manx Pirate” – as in the evil interloper, the hostile intruder – may be lurking in the shadows?
The plot is essentially about how the targeted prey (Cheryl) will be led to, baited and “snookered” (tricked and trapped) in a secret cabin in the woods by the devious clandestine peg-legged Manx Pirate (Tim), who has laid a complex series of clues (traps) to lure the prey, and how the prey continues to attempt all variations of moves and counter-moves to avoid being snookered by the Manx Pirate.
In the end, if our suspected prey (Cheryl) will indeed be snookered (cornered) and lured (tricked) to this secret cabin in the woods (the Pirate “Shack”), she will indeed be “kerplunked”! (forced to walk the plank) by the Manx Pirate.
However, as hilariously fun as this ongoing satire may be to us, the relationship between this Manx Pirate vs. Prey “fight or flight” scenario has real implications in the online world.
And we should always be aware that this "Manx Pirate" exists and may be targeting us online (as its prey).
Spam, False Messages, and Phishing Scams
Last week, I received this rather disturbing email from an anonymous messenger (actually I will post it here as soon as I locate it):
I don’t even know how he/she got my email, as all of my information is private.
How uncanny and serendipitous, he in turn is acting here as the “Manx Pirate” trying to lure me into this scam, by employing stealthy diversionary tactics – but I will have NONE of this!!
First of all, this foolish trickster claims “I have triggered off your webcam….”, but I am using a desktop computer, and I don’t even own a webcam. So I know immediately this claim is complete fiction.
Second, then he/she writes, “….send me $999 in bitcoin within 30 hours and I will not release any embarrassing information…”
This idiot is attempting to blackmail me without even knowing one single true fact. First, I do not own any bitcoin, second there is zero embarrassing information to send.
Better to Be Safe Than Sorry
Just in case, I immediately reported this suspicious activity to the Security team of my internet service provider for the email account my own personal “Manx Pirate” targeted me on, and explained all the details of the email. I then even immediately sent a screenshot to the Internet Security Team.
Although I knew this idiot was attempting a hair-brain stupid scheme that would get him/her nowhere, it is still always better to be safe than sorry.
Always report any suspicious activity immediately.
Immediately as per the recommendation of the Security Team, I changed my username and password, and blocked all visibility of any credit card information from the account. Although I knew my complete credit card information was never visible anyway.
Then I made a visit to my bank, and spoke with a very knowledgeable staff member of the bank who is up on all internet account security. He assured me I had nothing to be concerned over, and did not need to block my card or change any of my credit card information.
He mentioned to me that he receives suspicious phishing attempts via emails every day, and in turn he has turned these phishing scam emails “into his playground.” (*Note: this is not a retaliatory behavior I would necessarily recommend, even though he is doing this.)
Even though I knew there was nothing to worry about, this further assured to me I was safe.
15 Tips to Remain Safe on the Internet
There are dark forces lurking in the shadows!
My own personal “Manx Pirate” made me realize that no matter how safe we think we are, we can never be too vigilant about protecting all of our internet accounts.
In summary, here are my 15 tips on how to remain safe on the Internet:
- NEVER share your username and password information with anyone, not even a relative or close friend.
- Make sure your username and passwords for all your accounts are complex and contain a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters, having at least 16 total characters.
- Change your username and password frequently at least once every 2 months, and ALWAYS after suspecting any unusual activity in an account.
- Never tell your computer ”Keep logged in” or “Save Password”.
- Keep all of usernames and passwords stored in a very safe place.
- At all times, be sure you are always maintaining a secure connection online.
- Make sure there are SSL Certificates installed on all your websites and accounts.
- Install and activate a strong malware removal program on your computer.
- Install and activate a strong ant-virus software program on your computer.
- Block out all credit card information from all of your accounts.
- Pay the small fee for internet privacy protection by remaining anonymous on WHOIS.
- Report all suspicious activity IMMEDIATELY to your ISP and bank.
- Make sure (if applicable) your webcam is turned off when you are not using it.
- Make sure all Geo-Location devices (if applicable) are turned off when you are not using them.
- Whenever possible, search for information over the internet using incognito mode.
Can anyone else add other recommendations of how we can make our internet presences more secure? This would be very useful and highly welcomed.
Folks, I surely hope you will all remain vigilant in protecting your security on ALL of your websites and internet accounts.

Getting over a sinus infection I've had for about a month. Silly me, I thought I had the same virus that's going around, that antibiotics don't work on and didn't go to doc til a week ago. Have been on antibiotics since then...have a couple more days of them, then I should hopefully be good as new.
Oh Carol, that is not nice. I know what you mean though, you think you're the same as everyone else so you don't bother going to the doc as others have had nothing. At least you went eventually and got something for the infection.
Hope you are starting to feel better by now though. I never knew I had the chest infection until I went to the Doctor thinking it was my appendix. If that hadn't happened then I would never have discovered I had the chest infection. xxxx

It was only by going to the Doc thinking it was my appendix which you had urged me to do quickly that we found out about the chest infection. I never even knew I had it or how long I'd had it.
That was after going back and forwards to the Doc and being told it was just viral and my chest was clear yet I had reduced air entry in my right lung. xxxx
Like your rap lol. It did help me go to sleep - NOT, as I read it in the morning once I had gotten up again lol. xxx

It really is Carol. The very first Doctor I saw was the best one but as usual I never saw him again. The woman Doc I saw the second time I was sent in was the one who couldn't have cared less. She told me away back at the end of November she would arrange an emergency endoscopy, needless to say I still haven't heard a thing. xxx

Getting there friend. Still got this cough but not coughing half as much thankfully so here's hoping. Still don't feel 100% though. The worst part is actually speaking to people as I start to cough and can't stop. I was helping Stefan proof reading a post for the Newspaper and he kept saying he felt really sorry for me as I couldn't talk without having this massive coughing fit then needing to drink lots of water. Not much fun when you also have a wonky bladder either lol. xxxx
Yes, it's a new one on here. It is one of the trials that people who suffer from fibromyalgia struggle with from time to time, yours truly included.

Thanks Carol, I know and I am now getting fed up with it. Between having that really bad chest infection in November and then this which has totally floored me too.
If I thought it would work Sis, I would certainly try it. I remember there was a Doctor at our surgery for a while from Germany and I took Euan one day because he wasn't feeling well and she told us not to bother buying cough bottles as they are a waste of time and money lol. xxxx

That's ridiculous! If you're coughing, you need relief. I have a dry hacking cough from my allergies that I use mentholyptus cough drops for, but don't know if that would really help your deep chest cough. I have had prescription cough medicine with codeine in it when I had bronchitis and sinus infection. Isn't that available there if you could find a doc that took you seriously?
Thanks Carol, the thing I find that works best is just plain water. I have been sooking on cough sweets as well. It is more annoying than anything else, especially at night when I go to bed. I will get there though. xxx
I would like to say yes, but I have to say unfortunately not. I now have a full blown cold, runny nose, sneezing and still this most annoying cough. Really getting fed up now. xxx

That's just what I was thinking too Carol. I do feel better but still have this annoying cough which seems to be worse if I am talking to people which is a bit hard when I work with the public and in a shop.
On Wednesday (10th April) I am going into hospital for an operation which is totally unrelated to what I have just got over. I will pm you as I don't think this is the right place to say and it's not fair to put it on my personal friendly smiley clown's post for all and sundry to read. xxxx

Me thinks that's true. I'll be back if we ever get the mess with my car fixed. The latest is that no FL body shop will touch a car with human blood on it before it is sanitized by special team with Hazmat suits. Insurance company told us to take it to a car wash and not tell the body shop what happened to the car. GRRR!
Thanks, Kaju. It was a bunch of weird stuff happening, none of it catastrophic except the experience on I-95 south. Think I might send you a rough draft of a post and get your opinion of whether or not it's appropriate for the community. Some people might be really grossed out by the details, and the after shocks are still coming in, including the sister in law of the deceased who flew into our car calling to find out what happened since she couldn't get any straight answers from anyone. The stuff of murder mysteries!
That's dreadful Carol, even worse with the insurance company giving you that advice.

Yes, it was horrible, and we're still dealing with paperwork. Cops immediatlely told us it was NOT our fault after first trying to convince us it was a deer and not a person. Getting my car fixed has been the biggest bugaboo.
I'm doing a little better today. I had been havig daily headaches from the impact due to long standing problems with my neck, but woke up without one today. YEAH! I was diagnosed with PTSD at the ER. I still cry or fly off the handle with very little provocation, and that's just not me. Not seeing the flashbacks of the guy flying through the air at us as much now, but still cringe when I see a pedestrian waiting to cross an intersection, or some idiot jaywalking in heavy traffic.
Send me over the draft Carol, and I will give you my honest opinion if it is appropriate for WA, and if not how to edit it as such. You are a great writer, si I know you can do this by yourself, but maybe you need some objectivity here.

Haven't had a chance to do much writing recently, but will be working on this soon. It will probably be therapeutic for me.

Yes, this time it was a much more traumatic (the accident) move in some ways, but great in others. Just a matter of getting adjusted to living with someone, new climate, crazy drivers, and lots of traffic instead of peaceful mountain solitude.

I keep a small circle of black felt taped over my webcam until I want to use it.
I even unplug Alexa when not in use, since I discovered Amazon can (and does) listen into personal conversations through the device.
Paranoid...maybe a bit, but I’d rather think of it as careful.

Always better to be safe than sorry, Kyle Anee, kudos for taking the extra steps! I would do exactly the same. This is NOT paranoia, but wise precautions. Good for you, and stay with that!!
