What Are You Most Afraid Of?

We all have different type of fears when embarking on some new activitiy. Such fears can become greatly magnified when thinking of our online businesses.

This often can manifest itself as a fear of rejection, a fear of failure, a fear of being in front of a video camera, a fear of public speaking, to name a few of many.

Many of us don't even realize something else, we can even have a fear of success. This is a destructive trait that often leads to self-sabotage.

Choosing Entrepreneurship

Being an entrepreneur requires an enormous amount of taxing mental energy, and the high, lows, excitement, doldrums, and anxiety can hit you all at once. There are times when life seems totally fleeting and the fear of failure feels like it’s burning a hole through the back of your head.

After all, choosing entrepreneurship means you are choosing risk and acknowledging the chance for failure is a definite strong possibility.

Here are some of the negative thoughts that may speed through your mind:

  • I am uncertain I can generate an online income
  • I don’t know what my new clients will expect of me
  • I am not sure I can meet the initial expenses for operating costs
  • I am not sure my new clients will listen to my advice
  • I am not sure I can operate alone and carry the weight of my decisions
  • I don’t know if I can meet demanding deadlines
  • I am not sure I can handle the daily stress of running my own business
  • I am uncertain I can keep my emotions in check
  • I am not sure this idea will take off

Never kid yourself into believing entrepreneurship is a walk in the park. The pressure can be overwhelming, and until you can learn how to manage and contain the resulting anxiety, you will just need to prepare for an avalanche of gut-wrenching feelings that will immerse you in the early stages.

But you can’t ignore it, nauseated sickness withstanding.

Seriously, you had better have some potent antacids. Better yet, try some deep-breathing exercises. Breathe out for 8 seconds, and then try to breathe in for 16 seconds. Do this as many times as needed.

Did this help? Take notes.

So with this in mind, what are you most afraid of when it comes to thinking of your online business?

Please feel free to share your thoughts openly, and keep breathing!

Discussing our fears and ideas freely and interactively in an open discusssion can be one of our first steps to overcoming our fears.

Cheers,

Kaju

My biggest fear is that I will never be able to get a lot of traffic because no one will find my content interesting enough. I also fear I’ll never be able to generate enough income online to be able to get rid of this extremely crippling debt that I have. Yet I know that if I don’t take action, these fears will come true.

That's a double-edged fear for sure, and a fear most of us share!
You are in good company, including myself.

But you will certainly endure, since you are "Defiant"!!

Hi Kaju,

My fear is keeping up with my emails. I’m sure I have other fears but not willing to entertain them at the moment because I’m not sure how to label them. Is it fear or otherwise?

Actually, now that I think about it. My fear would be that: “I will be in the same place come next year which will be running into my second year here at The Wealthy Affiliate.”

No,no,no, lol, that just cannot happen.

Grrr...

So, Kaju, thanks for asking the question because you have brought it to my attention that it could very well happen and that I must approach this opportunity differently (how quickly we can fall back into old habits) because let’s face it and be real “Black Friday,” is not too far away, lol.

So, I guess you helped me sort that one out. I must have a better plan. Like getting up early in the morning etc., if I truly want to make this happen.

Yes, that would be my fear. I’m now breathing out for eight seconds and breathing in for 16 seconds, lol.

That was a real trip...

Way to go Kaju :)

Kindly,

Becky

Black Friday will be here before you know it, Becky. You are so right. Start setting your goals and a real daily plan in action!

You will do it.

Don't follow the 8 second breathing exercise either! That will make you dizzy!

K

Hey Kaju,

It’s all under control. Not to worry, lol.

Have a super day Kaju.

Kindly,

Becky

Super, you got this. Talk soon B!

Shoo, I have to think about this one... different fears come up at different times. I think right now I just want to be sure I don't die with my song unsung. I want to leave a legacy. I want to fill the world with love. I want to give people back to themselves. Working out the how.

That's awesome. You're awesome. Believe it.

That is one RAD answer, Lauren. Deep and profound, and just hit me to the core. Create a legacy and never leave your song unsung.

You are awesome!

So true. That answer sums it all.

Great post, I really needed to hear this because my biggest fear I won't get any customers to buy the product that I am linked on my website. And that nobody will like what I am offering. So far I have not made a sale yet but I know that it takes about 3-6 months I am just anxious about the whole thing. I am just working as hard as I can to make sure that it is right in all aspects.

Marylou, you have some very REAL fears that many of us share with you. Being an entrepreneur is a gamble, there is never a guarantee we will achieve success.

Just know that you have the advantage being a WA member to learn new skills all of the time, and to have the wonderful support of this community.

You/ we can only do what is in our control, work hard and to setup your online store and offer so it has the best chance to sell products. I will add, you MUST be willing to change your process and/or products if it isn't working - don't wait too long, that is a common mistake.

As experiment, measure, and retest. This never stops.

Thank you for the advice I greatly appreciate that so very much. I will do that because I have to add more products to my website I guess. I have the products on the site I just have to get the picture of it that is what I am talking about so the customers know what they are getting.

:):)

My fear is having started this task and not finishing it. That is my deepest fear at the moment. What am I doing about it? I am here daily to get inspiration from motivating blogs such as yours. But in the end, it is all up to me. As they say: “If it is to be, it is up to me”.

A decision: Find the time to complete the certification training.

Forever Grateful
Mojalefa.

Perfectly stated M. What we start we MUST finish. Failure in unacceptable. Period.

It's great to read motivational posts to brighten your outlook, but THEY will not be the reason you succeed,

Your WORK on your action plan, doing the certification training and APPLYING what you learn here everyday, THAT will be your success ticket.

A great lesson Mojlefa for us all,
Thank You.

I don't fear failure in this aspect anymore. I have been successful in the past but also humbled by life's lessons. The key is to be brave in anything in life whether you are fighting an illness, nearing old age or for younger people succeeding in their endeavors. All stages of life present new challenges and many people on their death bed regret living in fear for most of their life. I don't fear much except being alone when I kick off. Thankfully I have a great son and wife that will hold my hand as I go on to the next journey. But for now I do the best I can in life and in working on my website and try and live humble and grateful for all I have.

Very well-said, I couldn't have said this better. Thanks!

Thanks so much again Surfdude :) I have a new YouTube channel that's producing great content. Here's a great Tokyo story for you and the Efren match video play by play:)

I had a funny day!

One incident of the day of a traveller! The day as been full of incidents!

Let me tell you of one. I Traveled 5 Hours on a bus and all I want to do is pee!

A taxi driver as I got or a bus believed that me getting to my hotel was what I should do rather than going to the toilet!

As I walked away this man he was so sngry that he wanted to hurt me. He threatened me and in local dialect in front or tourist and Police.

I dropped my bags and faced this driver, he shouted like a cowering dog?

Wealthy affiliate members be strong no fears! Don’t fear technology and if you do, you will not move forward!!

Always be strong!

Wayne

Great story and very telling Wayne. I've been involved with rude and confrontational taxi drivers, especially during my travels in different countries. However, wanting to "hurt" you might be a new extreme for me.

You are right. "...Wealthy affiliate members be strong no fears! Don’t fear technology and if you do, you will not move forward!"

Unless we face our fears we won't be able to move forward. But fears do happen to ALL of us, whether we want to admit this or not. We need a Great COMMUNITY to support and discuss these fears, and we have that here.

As long as we have this tremendous supportive community we can allay many of our fears with help and answers, WE will all be fine moving forward, no doubt!

This probably sounds ridiculous to most entrepreneurs, but the thing that is holding me back online is mainly the thought of all the extra paperwork involved once my websites start making money...keeping track of income from various sources for tax purposes. At the moment my websites are just a hobby and my income, as far as tax is concerned, is all on autopilot, but the moment I start making money online, my tax status will change.

I had such hassle with the tax people many many years ago when I was between jobs for three or four months and didn't look for a job because it was the summer holidays and my children and my husband, a schoolteacher, were off school. I had the tax people hounding me for about two years with 'But what did you do between June and October...' It left me sufficiently 'traumatised' that I now feel that when I do start making money online I want it to be enough that it's worthwhile getting an accountant and doing all the extra paperwork.

Great story Isabella, and thank you for sharing that.
YES, I completely understand, this could actually be classified as falling under "the fear of success." I know others who have experienced similar and this is absolutely traumatizing.

The hassle of all the mounds of paperwork and expense of finding the right accountant can also trigger fear.

Great post Kaju. I also fear failure and the negative thoughts you mention in your post all arise at various times. I've realized they will always be about though so it's what I do with the thoughts that makes a difference. Some days I'm better at managing them than others. The key is not to let them defeat you, ever. :)

~Mark :)

Right on, Mark. Don't let the "negative demons" defeat you. We ALL struggle with this from time to time. By sharing posts like these, we can help each other overcome our negative thoughts and fears.

Let's stick together my friend!

Come on Mark, you would never be on anyone’s list of faililures!

You’ll be fine!

Wayne

Wayne - good save!!
Yeah, I agree Mark would be on my "Least Likely to Fail List" - he is always so component and self-assured, and I mean that in a very good way.

But this proves WE ALL are prone to negative thoughts at times, its how we handle them

Thanks Wayne. :) I believe that too which is why I never give up. Appreciate your feedback though.

~Mark :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence Kaju. :) Yep... the those thoughts can creep in but I am always stronger in the end.

~Mark :)

Right on!

Sometimes my fear in venturing out on my own so to combat it I throw myself into learning everything I can. After setting here and really thinking about this it just may be the fear of failure but I know each day I am gaining more confidence and working hard to accomplish my goals. I am determined not to let fear stand in the way as I really need this for my future.

Yes I've been there Dena. Immersing myself in work, work, work as a distraction to my fear.

It's wonderful that you are determined not to let fear defeat you, just remember WE are all here for when you need a boost of encouragement or someone to lean on.

Thanks I have found this is a wonderful community and always very encouraging.

Thanks so much again Deanna :) I have a new YouTube channel that's producing great content. Here's a great Tokyo story for you and the Efren match video play by play:)
