Happy Camper! Warm and Fuzzy On Page Speed Insights!

I’m all warm and fuzzy and rollin’ along again!

Recently I moved my siterubix.com test site to my own domain name that I purchased from a different registrar which I included here and which added an SSL Certificate.

I was really amped up to finally transfer my test site I created over to my own domain “brand” as I had produced a website with great Page Speed Insights that achieved lightning fast load times and was highly optimized.

Note that I checked my Google Page Speed Insight scores for all 25 of my site pages right before the move, AND changed NOTHING in my website content prior to moving, and I confirmed that everything i.e. all files, etc. from my siterubix.com site completely transferred to my new .net domain.

Considering that all the files I moved were unchanged and exactly the same when I moved them, one would think that “moving” – no, actually redirecting everything from a siterubix.com site to a new domain name both hosted here at WA would produce no change. Right?

Wrong.

Be aware. When you are hosted on WA and you are moving your siterubix.com website to a new domain name that you own from a different registrar using the “Move” button located in Site Manager, in the process your Google Page Speed Insight scores may go totally haywire.

This just happened to me. Check out my previous Page Speed Insight scores from siterubix.com:

Now check out many of the new scores for the SAME pages shortly after moving all the SAME content from my site to my .net new domain name. Quite a shock to say the least.

I contacted Site Support, and after several hours they answered the reason for this was the following:

“When your site was moved over the Page Speed URLs were using non-SSL links. This resulted in a redirect when Google's Page Speed Insights queried your pages. This redirect action reduced your scores. The page URLs are cached in our database for a few hours and this cache has been cleared out. You will now see that your pages are all using the SSL (https) urls and your scores are in the high 90's We also made a change on our end as we noticed some duplicate cached pages so we have removed those for you”.

So I went back and rechecked all 25 pages for my new .net site in Google Page Speed Insights.

And here were the updated scores:

So yes, the site is still lightning fast, and for these latest results I am a Happy Camper once again, all warm and fuzzy and rollin’ along!

But that still leaves many questions in my mind that Site Support never explained other than, “It was a minor issue on the server which has been resolved”.

Sorry. Not good enough.

So can anyone please explain -

How does this mechanism work when adding an SSL certificate and moving to a new domain name, why do these negative scores happen even albeit temporarily in Google Page Speed Insights?

Specifically answering to why “…This redirect action reduced your scores”.

I know there are many very knowledgeable peeps out there in WA land who know this answer and can clearly explain this to me, a very inquisitive WP newbie.

Opportunities for new knowledge is "sproutin' about" everywhere for us to snatch up here at Wealthy Affiliate!

Thanks Ladies and Gents, any of your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Kaju

I couldn't begin to answer this one. It's way outside of my expertise, but I'm glad it was fixed. It's a good thing somebody knows what they're doing.

Don

Thanks. Me too Don, glad it was fixed. But yesterday an even bigger problem came up. Damn, they follow me around!

What happened now? I guess if you have all your problems now, you won't have any later Right?

That would be a comforting thought, I hope your instincts are correct!

Thanks so much again Don:) I have a new YouTube channel where I'm producing great content.

If you don't yet, I will happily return the favor when yours is up.:)

Hats off to you for trying to learn and understand everything. Site support fixed the problem! That's all the information I need to know. I know it is important to understand all the little things that go into managing our sites...it is our business...but I just don't understand everything...So glad support is available. Glad your site us now up to speed.
Debbie

The more WE understand Debbie, the more we can optimize our sites to get the best traffic. I don't JUST want to know that the problem was taken care of by Site Support, I want to understand the problem, and why the fix worked.

I feel it is extremely important to be self-reliant and to be independent, rather than leaving everything to Site Support.

Thanks Debbie, I appreciate your comments. But Site Support makes mistakes too, that they can't even answer. Like the disaster that happened to my site yesterday.

It's good though it all worked out for the better.

Yes it did, thank you GardenGuy, I SO appreciate your comment!

Kaju, so good that it all worked out well in the end.
I can imagine it stirred you up first.
I have no clue about this. It's too advanced for me at my stage of my online career ;-)

Wish you huge success with your speedy site!
:-)

p.s. What a cool Smiley!
I love smileys!

Nice to see you here Pernilla, thanks for your comment and for stopping by! Yep, it all worked out well in the end!

Believe it or not, I was walking at night on a weekend, and saw "Big Smiley" by the side of the curb several months ago. I said to myself, "I have to take this photo, I can use "Smiley" later!"

And there he is. He came in handy!

How awesome to walk into a Smiley just like that! It‘s certainly a good sign!
:-)

Indeed P!!

Thanks Kaju
