Failure is Beautiful

Folks, let me make you aware of an inconvenient reality: there is a major self-delusion circulating among “wantrepreneurs”.

Simply stated, there are way too many “wantrepreneurs” embarking on this journey who honestly believe they can reap the rewards of running their own businesses without ever enduring days:

  • where technology will fail them
  • where their websites will crash
  • where they will be attacked by hackers planting stealthy viruses
  • where their budgets won’t overrun
  • where they will infuriate some of their customers

So first PLEASE get off this delusional gravy train, get your mind out of the clouds and keep both of your feet planted firmly on the ground.

Also if you are not familiar with the term "wantrepreneur" read my post Don't Be a Wantreprenur

All of the above will certainly happen and more. But most of all, understand this.

Failure is Beautiful

Now you know I don’t mean this in the strictest literal sense, or do you? You may be asking yourself, “Has Kaju gone insane?” Why is failure beautiful?”

For every entrepreneur, there has only been ONE formula to success.

To fail their way to success.

Intentionally. Embrace failure

The truth of the matter is you WILL fail in ABUNDANCE before you ever come out on top. Before you achieve your greatest successes. This is inevitable. The sooner you accept this, the easier it’s going to be to bounce back from your failures.

ALL successful entrepreneurs actually fail their way to success.

What Are Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs?

What are the traits of successful entrepreneurs? They acknowledge from the beginning there’s but one thing that is guaranteed: there is no such thing as a mistake-free, risk-free, pain-free business.

I can relate this to my own experience with my own interior design and building company.

According to plan, we thought this would be a smooth sailing project. Serenity Spa was scheduled to open its doors for business in NYC on August 16. However by late July we ran into several unforeseen challenges.

I remember it as clear as day.

Things were not going well, we were now running far behind on the timeline. Building material delays and work held up by outside sub-contractors which the client hired were further delaying the finishing of this project. Also, an integral part of a credenza unit that was a focal point of the retail area arrived from Italy damaged.

The client was getting very testy with me with each passing day so as the principle designer-entrepreneur of my own business I had to be creative and think fast.

First was finding an adequate local replacement for the damaged part of the credenza and obtaining the final building materials on delay.

Check.

Next was to bring in my own specialty finishers to replace the outside contractors hired by the client (and to convince the client to replace them) who were dragging the project.

Done.

In the end, we had pull 3 consecutive all-nighters to finish the final design and build out of Serenity Spa in NYC to meet our deadline in mid-August.

Yes, by the skin of our teeth we made it happen and opened the spa for business by 8:00 am on August 16.

And although our eyes were severely blood-shot from lack of sleep, we were paid in full by a very happy client.

Once again, by failing our way to success.

We Never Gave Up

These were highly stressful and demanding situations that required quick decision-making and action. By mid-July, unforeseen circumstances were causing failures all around us. The house of cards was falling down.

But did we give up? Not a chance.

We stayed calm and focused, and in the end met our deadline despite the many small failures.

The truth is no matter how carefully you map things out – and no matter how many contingencies you plan for - once you get your business off the ground, Murphy’s Law will prevail. And whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong.

Smaller intermittent failures are imminent. It’s guaranteed. And while this can be highly stressful and a pain in the butt, it’s a 100% normal part of the process.

The real growth comes from what you do AFTER you fail.

Remember. Intentionally. Embrace failure

Try This Thought Experiment

Never give up at the first signs of trouble. Or even the 20th sign of trouble. You will surely experience many failures, situations will go awry beyond your control, and you will fall hard.

So here’s a thought experiment I would like you to try today.

Forget about trying to have the “perfect day” in your business. Think outside the box and try something out of the ordinary today.

Say to yourself, “What insane unanticipated event is going to happen to me today that’s going to transform my business for the better?”

Start embracing your failures today. Fail fast and fail hard. And then come up with a solution.

In other words, fail your way to success. For failure is learning.

Failure is Beautiful.

More valid food for thought.

I'm glad you think so, RAF. I hope these thought experiments will help.

Well, that’s just what I needed to hear. Perfect timing, Kanu. Thanks.

Wow! What a post. I think it reflects what is happening to me at this stage. I AM FAILING... I hope temporarily. I don't panic, and I am calm... I am taking this as a lesson. I am trying to find ways to recover, it is just too much on my plate... for another week. Things should work better. I hope.

If you are failing Nadja you are thankfully Alive and Well, and I love your calm disposition!

Try this: this week take some things off your plate, and only focus on the 1-3 most important things you need to do for your business everyday. The 1-2 things that will bring you monetization. Or the 1-2 things they will get you closer to it.

Keep at this and stay calm and focused, you WILL succeed!

Thanks so much again Nadja :) I have a new YouTube channel that's producing great content. Here's a great Tokyo story for you and the Efren match video play by play:)

Good advice.
Jerry

Thanks Jerry, appreciate it!

This is great advice, Kaju, and very motivational - just 'fail your way to success'. I think it's important for everyone to be aware that failure is normal and that you can actively turn it into success. There is a widespread misconception that successful entrepreneurs are at the top because they never fail. And this is what makes some of those trying to start their own business give up after the first hurdles. However, "it’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce that counts". So let's bounce high.

I love your quote Sammy, "it’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce that counts."

This quote belongs on Instagram!
No doubt, if we haven't failed, we aren't trying hard enough!
Thanks Sammy!

I enjoyed reading this post, thanks for taking the time to share.

This lesson never came to me so eye-opening as in my training to dive off the 3 meter board in high school...something about using your back full on to "break the water" while attempting a double reverse somersault will leave you shaken and stingingly reluctant to try again...my coach, bless his heart, simply pointed to the board with a wry kind of deliberation and said "again".

Still, when I think about my very thought as I approached the end of the board again I thought, No way do I want to fail again and I spun for all I was worth...Three times, finally, the charm and a satisfaction which led to a confidence. Eventually to runner-up
to a state title in my first year.

Thanks for bringing this home to me Kaju with your post on Failure.

I must say in looking at my career also in terms of learning curve, the fears in "failures" never neared the "satisfaction" of staying the course to completion...

Never give In; Expect Amazing, The Greater Views are at the Top!

Many thanks, my friend...David

This is an inspiring story David, the best thing your diving coach ever did for you was give you tough love. You failed your way until you succeeded. Great!

Great post Kaju. It appears the greatest gains are made in the teeth of the storm!

What do they say Mike, we excel most at the precipice? You are SO right! Thanks!

Thanks for this post, it is so true. To truly create a successful business one must fail many times and as we fail we learn. I have been here a short time but have had many failures to work through; however I am devoted to success. Pick yourself up dust off your jeans and jump in again.

Good for your that you are so devoted to success Deana. You will definitely fail your way to success. Kudos!

Love this! Just because something isn't easy doesn't mean it wasn't meant to be. Someone is testing you making sure you really want it.

You are so on this Andrea, thank you! I believe that, someone s testing us to see if we have the heart to persevere. So let's embrace every chance we have to fail, so that we will eventually succeed enormously!
