Presentation Means Everything!

Summoning up the Courage to Collaborate is a will and talent that we should all strive to achieve, and can bring greater success to our business endeavors.

Many success stories in life and business point to the courage to collaborate.

When former self-serving bickering business leaders, entrepreneurs, and project teams can find the courage to each reach out over the table to join hands and push their own personal agendas aside for the sake of their customers, wonderful progress can be made.

Presentation means everything and as internet entrepreneurs we need to be mindful and hone in on how our image is perceived by our customers and how it affects our business.

When we think about what we need to do to turn around our lackluster online businesses, all we need to do is learn from NYC’s Meat Packing District as an example of how we can turn around a total failure into a great success.

Ladies and Gents, this is the total power of collaboration.

More specifically, what highly valuable new customers and business opportunities are we forgoing and missing out on due to not paying careful enough attention to our image and the way we are presenting our business to our customers.

The Lesson of “Meatpacking”

The Meatpacking District in NYC’s lower West side is a perfect example. Going back to the late 1970's, this area that encompassed the lower west side of Manhattan was in a state of destitution. The only landmark that was known for back in those day was The Old Homestead Steakhouse, a NYC landmark that existed there since 1868 located on 14th Street and 9th Ave.

Unfortunately, back in the early 70s to early 1990's, "Meatpacking" was a foreboding place; most tourists were afraid to venture there at night, and business greatly suffered.

This once formidable and lasting neighborhood icon from the early 20th Century to the 1960's had lost its edge and was on the brink of going bankrupt.

With rampant drug dealing, street prostitution, and S&M clubs, "Meatpacking" devolved into one of the seediest neighborhoods in Manhattan. And there was no hope in sight.

That was until a new Mayor would take over the Big Apple in 1993 and purge a massive cleanup of “Meatpacking”, by cracking down on all the seedy S&M clubs, and locking up the drug dealers and prostitutes. His name was Rudy Giuliani, and he was the mayoral business leader to commence NYC’s first wave of gentrification.

Slowly beginning in 1993, new zoning laws were passed by the Giuliani administration to eliminate all S&M clubs in Meatpacking, and to make sex shops illegal in general on all major thoroughfares. Violent crime casualties and petty misdemeanors began to steadily fall in huge numbers from 1993 to 2000 and beyond.

Times Square was restored back to its heyday in new modern ways, with Disney setting the trend by moving in as its first NEW tenant of the 90’s. Its emerald image was restored shiny and new. There were new pedestrian plazas and burnished antique street lights lining a revitalized 42nd Street.

By the mid to late 1990’s, folks were spending record revenue receipts once again on plays such as “The Lion King”, and “The Phantom of the Opera”.

In a nutshell, people felt safe again.

And when people feel safe, they spend money.

Business was back and booming better than ever. In the same way our online businesses can receive a major image overhaul.

The same way that when people identify with our new and improved image for our online businesses, we will see increased brand loyalty and revenues.

Meatpacking Today

Ever since 1999, Meatpacking has experienced a renaissance all due to its new glamorous image. With the opening of the new haute couture boutique hotels such as the Gansevoort and The Standard, it has become a place where celebrities want to be seen and a tourist money machine.

Then in 2006. Meat packing was topped off by its crowning jewel, the opening of The Highline from the Gansevoort Hotel to West 20th Street, which has become a worldwide destination for international tourists.

Our Businesses Can Always Improve

There is always hope for our businesses if we are willing to improve our presentation and image to our customers How can we improve our image as a business?

Think of who your core customers are, what are their demographic, who they embody, and how you'd ideally like to represent your company to them. Can we design a new logo that best embodies our company culture? Can we provide a new line of products and services that will enhance our presentation?

Can we hand out free giveaways that will reinforce our NEW image moving forward?

Brainstorm, come up with new and bold ideas, think outside the box, collaborate with partners and associates, and write everything down.

Soon enough, new visions will unfold to take your business in a new direction Just like with the radical and positive change in Meatpacking, it only takes one great idea that gets implemented into a necessary revision to set off your new image, and to change the direction of your business.

Start getting those ideas in motion today for your new business success tomorrow.

Find the Courage to Collaborate

When I think of NYC's meatpacking district I think of the Good-fellas packing stiffs in the cooler. Glad to see the renaissance here Kaju!

Lol! That "Goodfellas" vision is the 1990 Meat Packing district image most of us still keep as a stubbornly ingrained stereotype in our collective conscious Mike!

You wouldn't recognize it now. High-end gentrification, Coach, Whitney Museum, huge Apple store, The Standard boutique hotel, etc.

Inconspicuously hidden between the high-end conglomerates there STILL EXISTS (2) original Meatpacking establishments, but unless you look really hard you will miss them! The "stiffs" may be still "packed in the cooler," but they must be hidden and buried behind the backyard dumpsters!

You’re right, presentation plays a huge role in how you are accepted and understood. With new ideas comes new opportunities!
Thanks,
Marcus

Thanks for your great comment Marcus. Very, very true!

Great post I enjoyed reading it. We need to think outside the box and bounce ideas off on somebody else that is willing to help us grow with our websites and grow in business. It will make us better in the business world and experience new things. That is a great idea except we already have that here in WA.

As the old cliche claims, "Two heads are better than one", except we have 1.2 million heads here at WA.

So you are absolutely right Max, WA is the Best Collaborative environment!

Thank you

Wonderful article! I love how you spoke about thinking out of the box.. it’s so true! The way we present ourselves is crucial to our customers coming back.

I’ve noticed as my sites grow, I grow with them in a better way. Like life! How we speak, dress, approach things gives an image of ourselves that people see immediately and get the feel of who we are. Our websites are the same..

Thanks for writing this. It made me smile. :)

Kristy

I am really SO happy to hear how you are growing with your websites, Kristy. Good for you!

As long as we keep learning and "think outside the box", we are always getting better. YOU are always getting BETTER! Next to great content and being tenacious toward your success, Presentation is everything.

Keep up that wonderful smile Kristy. It's not only a "feel good" remedy for the soul, but it keeps your happy customers who see you coming back!

Awww thank you! You made me smile even bigger :)

Thanks Kaj for taking time to write this inspiring post. There are many goodies I can take away. You're right, innovative, think out of box and have the courage to a positive change is key moving forward in any business type, online or offline.

Awesome post.

:)
Joe

That's it Joe. Summon the courage to collaborate, and keep thinking out of the box. Positive changes are then attracted to you.

Thank you for your inspiring comment, my friend!

Even the best looking business can improve some where and become even better. I try to work every day to improve something along the way.

That is wonderful Dena. You said it all. There is ALWAYS room for improvement, no matter how good your business looks.

Keep thinking outside the box, and be willing to collaborate with the right people D. Everything is HERE at WA!

Cracking down crimes is really a collaborative effort.

Jimmy, no doubt it took "total collaboration" to crack down on a crime problem that had lasted 25 years in Meatpacking to produce this type of change.

One man cannot do this alone; it took the cooperative efforts of the mayor, the governor, urban planning board, the unions, etc. to get this done. And in this case, collaborators who weren't always on the best of terms either.

My point is, if this type of collaboration is possible to achieve monumental changes in NYC, it is certainly possible to find someone here at WA whom mutually you can both help each other take your businesses to a better place!
