When we think about what we need to do to turn around our lackluster online businesses, all we need to do is learn from NYC’s Meat Packing District as an example of how we can turn around a total failure into a great success.

Ladies and Gent, Business is now open, and Business is Good!

Presentation means everything and as internet entrepreneurs we need to be mindful and hone in on how our image is perceived by our customers and how it affects our business.

More specifically, what highly valuable new customers and business opportunities are we forgoing and missing out on due to not paying careful enough attention to our image and the way we are presenting our business to our customers.

The Lesson of “Meatpacking”

The Meatpacking District in NYC’s lower West side is a perfect example. Going back to the late 1970's, this area that encompassed the lower west side of Manhattan was in a state of destitution. The only landmark that was known for back in those day was The Old Homestead Steakhouse, a NYC landmark that existed there since 1868 located on 14th Street and 9th Ave.

Unfortunately, back in the early 70s to early 1990's, "Meatpacking" was a foreboding place; most tourists were afraid to venture there at night, and business greatly suffered.

This once formidable and lasting neighborhood icon from the early 20th Century to the 1960's had lost its edge and was on the brink of going bankrupt.

With rampant drug dealing, street prostitution, and S&M clubs, "Meatpacking" devolved into one of the seediest neighborhoods in Manhattan. And there was no hope in sight.

That was until a new Mayor would take over the Big Apple in 1993 and purge a massive cleanup of “Meatpacking”, by cracking down on all the seedy S&M clubs, and locking up the drug dealers and prostitutes.

His name was Rudy Giuliani, and he was the mayoral business leader to commence NYC’s first wave of gentrification.

Slowly beginning in 1993, new zoning laws were passed by the Giuliani administration to eliminate all S&M clubs in Meatpacking, and to make sex shops illegal in general on all major thoroughfares. Violent crime casualties and petty misdemeanors began to steadily fall in huge numbers from 1993 to 2000 and beyond.

Times Square was restored back to its heyday in new modern ways, with Disney setting the trend by moving in as its first NEW tenant of the 90’s. Its emerald image was restored shiny and new. There were new pedestrian plazas and burnished antique street lights lining a revitalized 42nd Street.

By the mid to late 1990’s, folks were spending record revenue receipts once again on plays such as “The Lion King”, and “The Phantom of the Opera”.

In a nutshell, people felt safe again.

And when people feel safe, they spend money.

Business was back and booming better than ever. In the same way our online businesses can receive a major image overhaul.

The same way that when people identify with our new and improved image for our online businesses, we will see increased brand loyalty and revenues.

Meatpacking Today

Ever since 1999, Meatpacking has experienced a renaissance all due to its new glamorous image. With the opening of the new haute couture boutique hotels such as the Gansevoort and The Standard, it has become a place where celebrities want to be seen and a tourist money machine.

Then in 2006. Meat packing was topped off by its crowning jewel, the opening of The Highline from the Gansevoort Hotel to West 20th Street, which has since become a worldwide destination for international tourists.

Our Businesses Can Always Improve

There is always hope for our businesses if we are willing to improve our presentation and image to our customers

How can we improve our image as a business? Think of who your core customers are, what are their demographic, who they embody, and how you'd ideally like to represent your company to them.

Can we design a new logo that best embodies our company culture? Can we provide a new line of products and services that will enhance our presentation?

Can we hand out free giveaways that will reinforce our NEW image moving forward?

Brainstorm, come up with new and bold ideas, think outside the box, collaborate with partners and associates, and write everything down. Soon enough, new visions will unfold to take your business in a new direction

Just like with the radical and positive change in Meatpacking, it only takes one great idea that gets implemented into a necessary revision to set off your new image, and to change the direction of your business.

Start getting those ideas in motion today for your new business success tomorrow.

And don’t forget, presentation is king. Thank you for joining me on this discovery to your renewed business success through image enhancements.

Wow Kaju!

This is quite the amazing presentation, posts like this are rarely seen on websites let alone here on WA.

Wonderful share my Friend!

Tony

I greatly appreciate your comment Tony, simply for the fact I rarely ever see you. So I know you mean it in earnest.

Really appreciate this, and glad you enjoyed the post!

Good stuff Kaju. Thanks, Tom

Thanks so much Tom. Glad you enjoyed it! I hope to see you again soon.

Kaju - Great post! Our businesses are always evolving. If you're not changing you're not growing. Thanks for sharing.

I'm really happy the lesson came through here, Patrick. Thank you for liking this post! So true, one must always evolve just like our businesses!

Hey Kaju,

I have come up with several new ideas in the last few days. It feels like a period of momentum building for my website. I have had a bit of an increase in traffic as well, set up Webmaster tools on Yandex, got some new post ideas and generally feel more optimistic!

Thanks for this additional boost! I do need to start writing things down again though! I don't want to lose any of my ideas!

Jessica

That's wonderful Jessica! I'm so glad to hear that. We need to be adaptable, and cannot let the winds of change get us down. I have adapted.

You definitely need to write those ideas down, in your phone, on paper, anywhere that is retrievable as soon as the idea pops into your head. Essential.

Yes, thanks!

Thank you for this Kaju, images reminded me of when I was in NYC back in 2012. It's funny because when I looked at the image of Times Square I instantly said to myself I have been there and stood in there. xx

Cheryl, I'm really thrilled this could bring back some fond memories for you with the addition of a business lesson, that photo is a bird's eye view. And I'm sure you stood pretty close to that spot where the photo was taken. Nice, hope you can come again!

Would love to come to New York again as I loved it and we walked miles and miles round all the places as well as watching the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade, taking in two NFL games, the Jets and the Giants plus going to see the Rockettes 85th Anniversary Christmas show which I have to say was amazing. We still had so much that we didn't get the chance to do though. xx

Wow!! You did more great stuff in NYC in one week than I've done in years C!

That was just in 5 days, we also went to Central Park, walked from the hotel to Bloomingdales then from Bloomingdales to Macy's and went up the Rockefeller Centre, very busy we were lol. Xx

OMG, you busy bee! Next time you need to go to The Highline and Meatpacking.

We also wanted to go to ground zero but never got the chance as well as taking a broadway show. We did go and look at Broadway and we were going to book tickets for Wicked but couldn't get them for when we had time to fit it in. From the Waldorf how far is it to The Highline and Meatpacking?

Because we arrived after hurricane Sandy, the Islands were all closed so we didn't get the chance to visit them either. The one thing I wanted to see was the tree lights going on at the Rockerfeller but they didn't do that either because of the hurricane, We left on the Monday and they switched on the tree lights on the Tuesday.

Definitely plenty to come back for to see and do. xx

NYC is like any other large city that let its infrastructure decay and now has to go back and refurbish neighborhoods.

Yep, that is very true Davida. The neighborhood had decayed, but we were lucky it was able to be refurbished. Other major cities like Detroit and Baltimore, not so lucky.

Thank you Richard. Despite any inferences to "the playground" that's been happening, I always do my best to get my research right and to present a strong business lesson and message in all my posts.
