Waiting for the Arrival

As I sit and enjoy my coffee each morning, I watch and listen to the world around me. It is before the first hint of light in the darkness. I hear the last calls of the night-life and the first calls of the morning. I am looking for the Herald. I am waiting, waiting, waiting...

Looking around for the source of the sound but my frail eyes cannot see that which surrounds me. I listen again, harder still. With breath coming shallow and quiet, waiting, waiting waiting...

A sense of peace envelops me as I wait in expectation. There is around me sounds of many creatures, large and small, with cries, screeches, howls and grunts all busy with life. They too are waiting, waiting, waiting...

Each has its own voice. The night delivers sounds of hunters and prey. The growl of the cougar, the hoot of an owl and the squeak of a mouse as it scurries for cover. I listen to the crickets as they rub their legs looking for a mate.

Some are waiting for the night to end, others are waiting for life to begin. Each is waiting, waiting, waiting...

The smells of life burst forth with aromas rich with the smell of the earth promising new life for the day. I smell the earth that has produced rich aromas for us to smell. Some are dank while some produce the sensation of waiting for the magic of regrowth.

The earth goes around and around, spinning through the vastness of time. The earth is waiting expectantly to produce life, both large and small. The labor pains are here for us to see and hear but we are waiting, waiting, waiting...

Dawn of a New Day

I see a faint glow in the East announcing that day is not far away. With each moment that passes there is a sense of expectation, waiting, waiting, waiting...

Suddenly, I hear faintly at first a song. Who could be singing as the day breaks? Who would dare disturb the melody of the night, whose sounds are so near and far? First it is slow and far away, then closer still, now it is upon me. Who would dare to sound so cheerful at first light? Why are they not waiting, waiting, waiting...

The day has not yet broken the night. It is but a glow for all to see. The sky is purple, then pink as a new dawn approaches. I hear another voice entering the song of welcoming a new day. Who would dare? Should they not be waiting, waiting, waiting...

As I can barely see the images, faint, indistinct, but there nonetheless. I strain to see who is singing the melody I hear. I begin to wait in anticipation of what is to come. I am waiting, waiting, waiting...

Again, I hear a sound, unobtrusive, yet persistent. Looking around for the source of the sound but see nothing. I hear it again, just a whisper, faint but distinct. A sound so low that it is barely heard but adds to the symphony that is rising for the day. We are all waiting, waiting, waiting...

A light breeze is stirring, a bit of winter's chill still evident, a feeling that cools the body but warms the heart. The breeze imparts the news that there is a newness about to unfold for those who have been waiting, waiting, waiting...

The day has now broken! The first edge of brightness is seen far to the East, a hint of the day to come. No longer are we waiting, waiting, waiting...

The birds now sing fully that the new day has arrived! They join the symphony and chorus of all the creatures who delight in the rebirth of the world each day.

Hush!!! Be still, watch, wait and you will see antics of squirrels that greet the day. There may be one or there may be three. They scamper, they chase, they chatter to one another for the day that is to be. No longer are they waiting, waiting, waiting...

The Herald

Who is this Herald? Where is the Herald from? What does the Herald bring? How will I know the Herald? Why does the Herald come? These are all questions we ask ourselves, even unknowingly.

For some the Herald may be the blaring of an alarm clock. This sound is too abrasive for me. Others still it may be a child that is 3 or 4 years old, coming to say good morning. They have the smell of all little ones, sweet with warmth and love.

Each of us have our own ways of greeting the Herald, do you take the time to greet the Herald or just plunge into your day? I have found that when we take a moment to find that sweet, peaceful moment at the beginning of the day, we are better for it. I hope you find your Herald and take the time to just give thanks for another day. May it bring you Joy and Peace.

Lovely post -- very fulfilling to read. Thanks for sharing with us.

Yes, the day arrives, and perhaps each of us has our own herald. Mine changes over time. Until I lost my kitty last fall, he was my herald -- always letting me know that a new day had come and it was time for me to get up and enjoy it.

We all have our heralds that alert us to a new day. We can find other ways to remind us of another day starting and find a way to be centered for the day.

Hi Jerry. This was a beautiful read and really captured my imagination. My 5am starts to each day, meditation and embracing the stillness are so precious to me.
Thank you for sharing this uplifting post.

Tracy

Tracy,
I am glad that you found this post resonates with you. We too often forget that in the quietest hours our mind, imagination and attitude for the day come into focus fully. We need to take time to appreciate the moments that surround us.

Poetic!

Rosana,
Thank you for finding this poetic. I was just writing what seemed to be the most reflective of what I was experiencing at the moment. The words just flowed from my fingertips to the post.
Jerry

Excellent sentiments esconched comfortably in an equally excellent read, Jerry! The new day has arrived!

Jeff
