How to do Keyword Research for Product Reviews?

In this post, I would like to give you some product review tips from my own experience.

When we're doing keyword research for our product review posts, the most common phrase we look for is "{Product Name} review".

So if you're writing a review for Wealthy Affiliate, it'll be "Wealthy Affiliate review". For Jaaxy, "Jaaxy review" so on and so forth.

There's nothing wrong with this but there are a lot of potential keywords that you may be missing out if you don't think creatively.

Product Review Keyword Variations

Let me give you some keyword inspirations...

For the keyword phrases below, I'll use "XXX" for the name of the product.

  • Is XXX a scam?
  • Is XXX legit?
  • What is XXX?
  • How does XXX work?
  • Is XXX worth it / worth the price?
  • XXX scam review
  • Is XXX scam or legit?
  • Is XXX legit or scam?
  • Should I buy XXX?
  • XXX review 2018 (current year)

(Update: There are some products that have version 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc. This is a great opportunity for you to find even more potential keywords. If the latest version is 3.0, make sure you check each keyword phrases with the "3.0" in them!)

Some of the phrases may be very similar but don't underestimate the power and potential for each of them.

For example, "Is XXX a scam" and "Is XXX legit" can have quite a huge difference in terms of keyword searches and competition.

Ultimately, you want to choose the keyword that has the highest number of searches & traffic while having the lowest amount of competition (QSR).

So whenever you're doing keyword research for your product review, you should spent a couple of minutes more to search for all the different variations of the same root keyword. Because sometimes "Is XXX a scam" and "Is XXX legit" may have a big difference for your post ranking and thus organic traffic to your website.

Guidelines for a Good Keyword

In WA's training and webinar, Kyle & Jay have taught many times about how to do a keyword research. This is just a gentle reminder for those who're not familiar with keyword research yet or for those who forgot.

Ideally, here are the simple rules to follow:

  1. Number of Monthly Searches >100 (The more the better)
  2. QSR (Competition) <100 (The lower the better)
  3. The keyword MUST be grammatically correct & make sense!

This is how it'll look like in Jaaxy:

As compared to the keyword "Wealthy Affiliate review", this keyword is much better to rank if you're new to the game. (Hint!)

However, please note that it's not a guarantee for you to have a good ranking if you've chosen a very good keyword, or even keywords with ZERO competition.

Because ultimately, whether your content ranks still depend on your on-page and off-oage SEO.

Kyle has covered the basics for Search Engine Optimization within the Core Training here at Wealthy Affiliate.

And Jay has covered more advanced SEO techniques in the weekly live classes. Below are some very useful Live Classes you MUST watch:

I hope you've learnt something new from this post.

Jerry

Thank you Jerry LOL!

Jerry thanks Jerry :D

Hi, Jerry. Good stuff. I’ve marked your post in my favorites. My issue with doing reviews is how to do a quality review without having used the product. I think it’s all in the research but I’m still working on getting comfortable with it.
Grant

Hey Grant,
Have you read my post on how to write a product review without owning the product?

Here's the post:
https://smartaffiliatesuccess.com/how-to-write-a-product-review-without-owning-product/

May I know if you're reviewing digital products or physical products?

Thanks, Jerry. For my WA blog probably digital, for my niche physical.

One strategy you can use for both digital and physical products is to read all the existing reviews on Google page one.

All of them will have some slightly different opinions and points. Consolidate all of them and create a more informative and detailed review.

If you don't have any experience with the product, it all comes down to your research. Reading other people's reviews is just one type of research. You should think creatively and try to find things that other people are not talking about.

For physical products, it's best if you could borrow it from your friend, or partner with the seller. For digital product, you can make use of the refund policy and have a inside look for the program you're reviewing.

Everything is mentioned in my post I linked to you above. I hope you can gain some value.

Let me know if this answers your question :)

Thanks much.

Thanks for the product review tips!

Jerry,
Well written Specs and SEO Details ! Was wondering what your take is on the Traffic Number ?..........Scotty B ♫

If the number of searches per month is more than 100, it's unlikely for the traffic number to be less than 10.

I'm fine with traffic number more than 10 or 20 as long as the number of searches and competition meet my requirement.

Don't be too concerned if the traffic number seems very small because you need to know you're not just ranking for this one keyword.

You should only target 1 keyword per post but you'll be ranking for multiple relevant keywords in Google. So the total amount of traffic is the total number from all the keywords you're ranked under.
