Are you looking for a way of monetizing podcasts?

One way you may have overlooked is affiliate marketing.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is simply another word for referral marketing.

It's basically word-of-mouth advertising, but where the advertiser gets a cut of the purchase price when the customer purchases through a special link provided by the advertiser.

Commonly, these special links are seen on blogs or social media.

How can affiliate marketing help me in monetizing podcasts?

Have you ever heard a radio host or podcaster do a "live read"? This is where they read a bit of ad copy and refer you to a website if you want to buy the product they mention.

Typically, this comes across as an endorsement. The best podcasters and radio show hosts promote things that they themselves use and like. This way their "live reads" end up coming across much more naturally, and their listeners come to trust them and take their suggestions seriously.

If you want to do these types of live reads on your podcast, there are two ways to go about it.

#1 - You can find brands who will pay you for each time you read their ad. If you can prove you have a large audience, this could be substantially more upfront than you would expect with affiliate marketing, but you could be selling yourself short (see #2).

#2 - You can find brands that will pay you each time you send business their way from now until the end of time (well, as long as they stay in business and you keep an affiliate marketing agreement with them).

Remembering that your podcast will remain online to be downloaded for as long as you leave it there, option 2 could end up making you substantially more in the long run, as long as your listeners will actually be buying what you are selling.

So, what could you sell on your podcast through affiliate marketing?

The shows I listen to promote Amazon, Audible, Shari's Berries, Vistaprint & ProFlowers, to name a few.

And if your show has anything to do with earning money online, why not promote Wealthy Affiliate on your show? Click "WA Affiliate Program" to the left to learn more about what in mind is the greatest affiliate program out there.

The best thing to do is think of what products you love that are related to your show's theme, and find merchants who have affiliate programs that sell those products. That way you'll just be sharing what you love with your listeners.

If you're not already a member of Wealthy Affiliate, there's a whole lot more to learn about how to earn money affiliate marketing. The best part is, the first ten lessons are free. Just click on "Create a Free Account" above to start learning.

Yes i plan on using podcasts on my website. Anything else you can share about this subject would be great. What about pricing. How do you go about charging them? Let's say you are not marketing their product but they want you to advertise their product?

That is a very difficult question. It all depends on the size of your audience and the value to the advertiser.

If it were me, I'd use affiliate marketing rather than traditional ads because I'd want to get paid for each sale rather than just for each ad.

However, if I were going to put in traditional ads, I'd sell them on eBay at auction to find the market value.

I have to stress again, however, that I'd build up the audience before selling any advertising.

Thanks for the advice!

I'll try to create some hangout on air hope that Google allows the program to be as we still have the opportunity to build a network that way too

wow never thought about it but it is something to consider all the best Max

Very interesting, Jeremy, thanks!

Great concept.
Thanks for sharing with us.

My pleasure.

I had thought of podcasts but not in this way you would need some sort of affiliate number or something as how would the merchant know they came via you

Hi KatieMac. Thanks for the comment!

Yes, a lot of those brands I mentioned give out promo codes to their affiliates to give on air.

If you want to promote something that only gives you an affiliate link, not a promo code, you can create a forwarding url that goes to your affiliate link.

For example, if I were running a show called The Money Making Podcast, I could make themoneymakingpodcast.com/wealthyaffiliate either redirect to my Wealthy Affiliate affiliate url or, even better, it could be a page where I promote Wealthy Affiliate (better because it would be more personal and it could also be found in search engines).

That is great like the promo code idea I need to go explore this more, I feel a bit less confident making a video so this might be a better option for now thank you Jeremy
