OK,, I'm just about ready to give up on this whole process. I have spent more than a day just trying to get a website up. The first theme I selected, I wanted to change the th
I have been frustrated many times and really was upset with the "user-friendliness" OR "my idiocy" things at times, but I searched, and I got through. I found that it was much easier to search as I suggested rather than "trying to figure it out with a trial and error approach" letting the anger build to the point of freaking out. Haha. It is funny in a sense because it won't matter next year right!?

Actually, I think we all might have gone through moments feeling like this. If you make note of the theme you chose, then google search on how to apply what you want with your theme, you'll get a step by step answer
Take a deep breath, relax and came back to it later... I normally figure it out after I walk away LOL. I am on my second month and I am in the same position LOL...!

What is your theme?
If you are planning to personalise your theme, you should find all you need at "APPEARANCE". It changes a bit from one theme to the other, but all options are normally presented clearly.
You want to change the picture of the background? Or the picture of your main Home Page?
In any case, if you tell us your theme and your particular aim we'll suggest a solution for you!

Juan, thanks for your response. I've given up on trying to set up the website for my own business after selecting 4 different themes and now I'm working on my site to promote WA. I liked Enliven because I liked the image of a woman on her laptop, but when I selected it, it came across without the picture and a different format
The theme I selected is called "ENLIVEN" a woman working on a laptop. I wanted to keep the image however the image did not appear when I downloaded it to my site
I don't know if you are not planning to try it again :-S
In any case, I found the way to do it!
First you have to make a PAGE [Let's call it "PAGE X"]. That Page should have the title you want to have in big, on the content put the description under the title, and on the feature image (the image you select on the right side) the image you want for the background). Then:
Just go to "APPEARANCE" -> "COSTUMIZE", there you go to "SLIDER" -> "SLIDER 1", and you select the PAGE X. (SAVE and go back to COSTUMIZE).
Now go to "BLOG SETTINGS" and check the box "Activate Slider On Blog". SAVE AND SEE HOW ALL WORKS.
That should work as I have tried it myself!

Thanks Juan, I do appreciate you. I will try that later and see if I can achieve the results I want. In the meantime, I was able to get another site up, pretty plain Jane, but it is done. I will keep moving on the lessons and go back to setting up the website in a few days - it may be good to take a break. Thanks for your help

What's up with the themes I select that don't appear as ?

in NEED of help here. Have now picked and installed 2 different themes (winsome & seguente). Neither looks as it is shown. Both have menues on the right side, a large block at top. Neither of the themes chosen appear this way. How do you get theme to install as it is shown. If you can't get it as shown what is the point of the themes?
Have gone to customization but that does not give me the ability or info how to get it to look as shown. Have clicked on the more info for each theme (of course there the theme looks fabulous) but it does not address the fact that it does not appear as shown or how to make it appear as shown. HELP!!!!!!!!
When you are looking at the theme demos you usually see what the "pro" or paid version looks like. They do this to entice you to purchase the theme.
Often there are plugins or "meta sliders" that you don't get in the free version. It can be a little tedious to try to find the right theme and get it to work the way you need it to.
My suggestion would be to think about simplicity at first. If you are new at this, you should know that it is great content that will get you ranked, not a flashy theme.
The flashy theme is like the wrapping paper on a Christmas present. It's whats inside the package that really matters.
I often suggest to new people to start out with a basic, standard theme. Work through the lessons here, then move on to a more complex or flashy theme after you have a better understanding of how it all works.

The advice is appreciated. I find the sneaky way that the themes are being presented dispcicable, but I quess that just goes with greed.
So the question is how do you know which are basic standard theme?
Did not think the ones that I chose were flashy or complex - actually they seemed very straight forward and clean in design, to me, in their appearance.

Go to Appearance > Header and you should be able to change the image there. Your image needs to be the recommended size for it to work.
Which theme are you using? I'll install it on one of my test websites and make a screenshot for you.
use the "big white wide question tab" at the top middle of this site to find more in the subject. type in "change the theme picture for website" for example
