I believe it can take a few months or should it be sooner? I have created all of my posts with keywords without much competition so I am wondering if I can expect that to help me a
Depending on your content it can get rankings in weeks or months, so you have it correct.
Plus the more and more content you add to your site the more frequent the search engines (Google) will crawl your site for said content.
To generate traffic you need to be adding content to your site consistently.
You don't create one post and add to it.
You create new posts using keywords you have researched with low competition and good search volume.
Use the keyword(s) in the title of the post - then in the first paragraph and then simply write naturally from there.
You should be posting new content at least 2 or 3 times per week.

The best way to test it Jen, is to do a search for your keywords then scroll through Google and see if you can find your site. Mine was on page 5 after a couple of weeks but I haven't done much work this past week/10 days so it's slipped back down to page 10.

Wordpress and my plugins have some updates available. Should I got ahead and update these? Any reason I shouldn't yet? I am not too familar with wordpress so just want to double
I always do updates as they are ready and available. I do make sure to back up my site though beforehand just in case.

I may be late this time around however in future consider backing up your site first.
The plugin I installed for my site was UpdraftPlus, you can follow the great tutorial that my friend Trialynn (Terea) created to install UpdraftPlus

It is always a good idea to run a TOTAL backup once a week or just after you have done a lot of changes to your site.

I don't know what the WA official line on this is yet - but some people update straight away - others wait for a few weeks in case bugs are found in the new update - myself I just go ahead and update - not had a problem yet!
