9" Inches of SNOW today in my town in NE Kansas

Well everyone, we were supposed to get around 3 to 8" of snow on this Sunday night here in Junction City, which is a town in NE Kansas located off of I-70 right new to Fort Riley--home to the illustrious 1st Infantry Division--the famed Big Red One!

I'm originally from Texas--Dallas to be exact, but I came up here to Kansas in the Army when I was 18, and never left. I'm 52 now, so you do the math. Anyhow, apparently, my wife said that we ended up getting 9" of snow--go figure--and it's still snowing a little out there right now! This wasn't even supposed to happen until tonight. Most of the day, I tried to stay indoors, not liking to drive in this weather, but my wife had to work, so I decided to take her this morning since her car is much nicer than my old work van, and I didn't want some inexperienced snow driver (read IDIOT) to plow into her car. On the way to her workplace, we noticed several accidents as people continued to drive on the untreated and non-plowed roads as if it was a normal day, which it certainly was not!
Aside from the semi-treacherous drive to and from her work both when I took her and when I picked her up, the snow usually has a very cleansing effect. Sometimes for me, it brings on the doldrums type mood since I am cooped-up inside the house. When that time comes, like it did today, I decided to make the best of the situation--thank goodness for Wealthy Affiliate! Here, I can read and learn, converse with both learned and novice members of the platform, and write a blog post as I'm doing right now. I even managed to write a few pages in my current novel. In other words, I feel like I've been productive, and my loyal assistant seems to agree with me!
Has anyone else ever done this on a rainy or snowy day when at first you were feeling like you weren't going to accomplish anything? All in all, I feel like my accomplishments today were not too bad! I just wish that the snow would have waited for Christmas day as I have always loved the proverbial 'White Christmas' (love that classic movie too!) After all, we are fortunate enough to live in a part of the world where it IS possible to have a White Christmas--lots of snowing like is outside right now!
It was still early in the day when I took this picture, there's a lot more out there now, believe me! Sadly, it seldom has been a snowy Christmas day since I've lived here in Kansas, so as I look outside the window watching the lazy fluffy white flakes fall to the ground, I will keep dreaming of that white Christmas as I do my best to persevere in my endeavors to create a successful online business! It will take me longer than most because slow and easy is the way I like it, since I move like a box turtle most of the time.

Thank you all for reading! HOW IS THE WEATHER IN YOUR PART OF THE WORLD TODAY?

Hello from FL, where it is a breezy 59 degrees. However, I'm no stranger to driving in snow! I grew up in Iowa, about 20 miles from where that 50-car pile up on I-80 took place last week. Stay safe, and I hope you'll get your white Christmas. Who knows, if it stays cold, youmight still have the 9 inches of white stuff you already have! Merry Christmas, white or not.

Thank you, Carol! I appreciate that! Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you and yours!

Jeff

You're welcome. By the way, I lived in McPherson, KS for 3 years while attending McPherson College prior to transferring to Washington University in St. Louis.

Wow, that's cool Carol, so with Iowa AND Kansas you've had some experience with this weather for sure!

Jeff

You're right, Jeff. And, I've also lived in St. Louis, which is no stranger to winter weather, either!

Oh wow--I know about St. Louis--you got that right, Carol!

Jeff

Yep. I remember my first year out of college I was working at a hospital in East St. Louis, IL. The drive to work was very icy. I turned around and went home.

I've never been there in the winter time, Carol, but one summer I rode the train in there and looked at all the very old buildings falling into decay--very sad--things were built so well back then. I own a 115 year old limestone building in town where I live--very nice!

I haven't been there except driving through on my way to visit relatives in Iowa since I left there in 1998. Can't say I really miss it. Would love to see your old limestone building. I love old buildings. The little town in Iowa I grew up in is built around a "town square", a square block of lawn with a brick band stand in the middle, and of course a flag pole. The north and west sides of the square is composed of old buildings that have separate walls, but all of the buildings are connected. If one of them ever caught fire, they might all go up in flames.

I'll dig up a picture of it and pm it to you--I might even use it in a blog post--it was an old mill and used to be five stories tall--a fire in 1949 gutted it and in 1951 after Kansas winds blew the weakened walls in it was re-roofed as a two story! The pic might take a day or so.

I'd love that. Have you thought about putting it on the national register? I have a 2nd cousin who lives on a Century Farm in Iowa. My mother's grandparents moved from IL to IA and bought the farm over 100 years ago, and it has remained in the family ever since. My mother's cousin is in her 90s, and still lives on the home place. Her nephew is faming the land now.

Once or twice, but it's a little complicated--it's a little run-down and there were some poorly started remodels on the interior

Are you planning to restore it?

We did some work on the roof in back around 2013--replaced glass in 6 original windows wit extra original window panes that we found inside. Replaced one of the original double windows with french doors that lead out onto a deck. Before the loss of a good portion of my right foot, we were a machine in doing work around there. Not so much--don't know what the future hold--one day at a time!

That's for sure. We always think we have lots of time left and health til something happens to change our plans! Sorry to hear about your foot. I have a friend who is currently recovering from a partial amputation of her right foot...all the toes and part of the forefoot, I think.

Same as me Carol--a bilateral something or another they call it--it's been 4 years now, so can't quite remember the name of the procedure! It'll take some time, but she should recover pretty well!

Yes, I think she is doing pretty well. Is still going to wound care. Was joking today about getting high heeled, sparkly orthopedic shoes, so I know she's doing fairly well!

That's good to hear Carol--I don't wear my prosthetic--haven't for a couple of years now, just stuff the right show with folded up socks and it works fine! Glad to hear she is doing well! Merry Christmas!

Jeff

Whatever works! I have a friend who is an above the knee amputee from osteomyelitis of his thigh, and he is so lazy he sits in an electric wheelchair all day and has gained boocoup pounds! As a therapist, I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying something I shouldn't. At the time of his amputation, he was fitted with a prosthesis, but AK (above the knee) prosthetics are not very easy to adapt to. I think there was trouble with the fit, and he just gave up. Could easily have been ambulating with a walker, hopping on one foot, but I don't think he even tried that. Just gave up and got an electric wheelchair. Doesn't even get the exercise of propelling his chair. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but then, nobody ever did!!!

I agree, Carol! I just didn't lose the will to continue! Funny thing was, my arches had fallen since I had been out of the army and I have flat feet. I walk much better now than I did before the surgeries because they took the worst arch away! Funny how God works for good even in the trying times. Oh yeah, and I think that main surgery was called a transmetatarsal (Sp) bisection or amputation!

I imagine that's the same that she had, but never asked her.

Was in Ashland, Oregon that day and it was miserably foggy, rainy and cold, I had to buy a sweater there. Still, I always enjoy that Shakespeare festival town even out of season.
Came back again to blue skies in Arizona, but we will join you in snow at Christmas, I love it.

It is great, Petra, but with the fickle Kansas weather, I'm not sure if it will last!

Jeff

I do not envy your snow! Not one bit. I was just making a comment yesterday to someone that I would be just as happy if I didn't have to leave my house the rest of the winter!

We have about a foot and a half right now from two separate snow "events."

Yuck... Hibernation... I don't think it should be just for the bears and the bees!

Best wishes,
Karin 😁

Too true, Karin--but as I say, it sure allows us to get some work done here in WA, doesn't it? We have to count our small blessings wherever we can find them! WOW a foot and a half--UGH!

Jeff

Very true! I think we'd need about 15 feet for me to get a day off work, though! LOL

Small blessings are sometimes the best, though!

Best wishes,
Karin 😁

Yeah Karin--I had an employer like that back in the day!

Jeff

I am glad we have not had that kind of snow here. Of course in the south that much would paralyze the cities. But it is a beautiful site, we had that kind of snow in Illinois many times in the past and were able to get around without too much trouble.
Ah those memories - thanks
Ray

Thanks for stopping by, Ray! Originally from Texas, I concur with the paralyzing of the cities by this sort of weather, but I made my choice to remain in Kansas after I got out of the Army so it is something I've dealt with for almost 35 years. I'm glad to hear your reflections on the Illinois winters. Here's wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and happy 2020!

Jeff

Wow! I really love the pictures. It's amazing. I always love snow. It feels like everything has turned into just one........... one single color.....same color for all buildings, streets, cars, and everything....
It feels so peaceful.
Well in NYC we had little bit snow and the temperature this week was 40 degree average. So, far from the weather you have in NE Kansas.
Love,
Shahlla

Yes, Shahlla, but in the recent past, NYC has had it much worse. I agree, I like how the snow seems to cleanse everything momentarily under its white blanket! So peaceful--even sounds seem muffled by it!

Jeff

Thanks for dropping by, Shahlla--I appreciate all your kind comments!
