The Internet of Things

Hi there my lovely cyber family!

I heard something on the news. Someone was talking about the internet of things. Hmmm ... what is that I thought. So I asked Siri. And Siri said "Let me see what I can find".

This is a drawing representing the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things, or IoT is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as "connected devices" and "smart devices"), buildings, and other items -- embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. In 2013 the Global Standards Initiative on Internet of Things defined the IoT as"the infrastructure of the information society." The IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human intervention. I am not exceptionally techie, so a lot of the article went soaring right over my head. Many of you may know about this in great detail; but it was new to me. So I am sharing just in case anyone else doesn't know about this.

What I do understand (or think I do) is that many "things" we have, (such as Siri's home, my iPhone, our computers and many other electronic "things"), while helpful and convenient to have, also present some dangers.

We could (and are) being watched, we could be hacked, our information stolen, etc. The newer cars (with all the electronics) could potentially be hacked and someone could take control remotely and speed us up, or slow us down, or cause us to have an accident. Governments are already hacking in to other governements computers, etc. So there is a hugh potential for "bad things" to happen.

But if you think I am giving up my IPhone and my computer; forget it! To me the convenience far outweighs the potential for harm in my opinion. If we are held back by fear of what could happen, we will never get anywhere. What is your opinion or your thoughts on this subject?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Yes it is a scary thought Jeannie but unfortunately it is occurring. We just need to be more mindful for our own safety.

Thanks for reading and commenting Jerome.

I have heard of the Internet of Things before.

This is what I got out of it: You could adjust your thermometer in your house from your smart phone or check if you locked your doors and other various things that were set up to be accessed while you're away from home.

Not sure if I got it right but it's supposed to be one of those newer things happening.

Yes. There are any number of "smart" devises. Smart phone, smart tv's, smart home devices of all kinds, wearable devices, smart cars, etc, etc. And yes it is the new technology and can make things more convenient and easier and it is amazing. But along with it comes a dark side of being monitored, tracked, and hacked. It isn't the IoT I was referring to as much as the individuals, corporations, or countries who will use this wonderful technology for harm rather than good.

Thanks for reading and replying Gina.

OK. Now I'm getting the concept of it more. I agree with you. The more our lives are getting computerized, the more danger we are in losing our privacy and more! Sometimes I wish for the good ole days to come back! But then again, since that will not happen we just need to try to be very careful, if we can.

Right on Gina. Thanks. :)

My opinion:

1) Cover your computer camera and be aware of your phone camera.

2) Pray for disclosure that will stop this nonsense for once and for all so we can live in a positive world.

3) Keep a positive attitude, don't worry, be happy. That's our #1 job in life, I think!

Nice post, Jean!

Thank you for your well thought out comment Rori. And for your kind words about my post. :)

One of my boys once sneered at hacking into a toaster. But now...!

Yes, I don't think we can even imagine the possibilities for the devious heart and the technical mind. Thanks Mike.
