Relevant website COMMENTS, not feedback!

Hi friends.

It happened again. I asked for comments in the comment section, for a particular post. I got a critique of my website with nothing relevant to the post. It was a very nice; and would have worked for FEEDBACK! There was even a comment about where the person thought my menu should be.

There is so much confusion about comments and feedback. So I address it once more.

Once again mainly for new members: There is a difference between comments and feedback. I addressed this before in some detail, as have other members.

Comments should be relevant to the post the person is requesting comments on.

A brief comment about the website, if you like it, is appreciated; but the bulk of comment should be about the post you have been asked to comment on. A comment is not the place to tell someone what should be changed about their website; or even to correct spelling or grammar. That is feedback. If they want feedback, they will ask for it in the feedback section. Here is a previous blog if you have questions:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.co...

Anyway, now I have another comment that is actually feedback. Nice feedback; but feedback; just the same. I am faced with a dilemma. Do I just reject the comment that isn't relative to my post; or do I try to get in touch with the person to teach them the difference between comments and feedback? I don't like to reject comments; because I think the person meant well; however I really want the comments I receive to talk about the post, at least primarily.

What would you do?

Hi Jean,
I would keep the comment if it makes your website look good but if makes it look like your website isn't good then definitely reject it.

Maybe when you ask for comments you could add a little note to say something like: Please leave me a comment relevant to the post and not feedback on my website.

I've seen this on some others requests for comments and it gets the person thinking on the right lines as they write the comment.

Wish you the best.
Gina

Hi Gina. You are the only one who thinks I should keep it. It was actually a very nice comment. I thought about taking out the comment about where she thought my menu should be and keeping the rest. The trouble is it doesn't address the post at all. On my site near the end of my post I write a note requesting comments and questions regarding this post. I select a post to receive comments on the WA comments page. When you select a post then that's the one you want comments on, right. Lol. I haven't decided what I'm going to do; but I will soon need to. Do you think it would be bad to take out the part that made it feedback and keep even though it wasn't relevant to this particular post?

This would be a good idea!

Thanks Mickey. :)

Hi Jean,
If you can delete part of it but keep the rest then yes. The reason I say to keep it is because every comment you get on your website brings the site health up.
Regards,
Gina

Hi Jeannie,
I recall responding to your earlier post concerning this same subject. Really don't know why it continues to occur but it does unfortunately. I think what you mention about taking out the feedback part is a good solution. I would also PM the individual back to let them know that you are omitting that portion as it was feedback that you did not request.

Thanks Gina.

Thanks Jerome; but I wasn't able to find them on here.

Hi, Jeannie! Really with how everything is clearly explained thoroughly by Kyle on both the site feedback and article comments platforms, there is no excuse for members here at WA to continue making such a mistake.

What would I do? Well, I've already done it several times. I just disapproved of the comment - stating my reasons as being perhaps the individual needs to follow directions, or perhaps even read them!!

It definitely should not be your job to teach the difference between the two to any member, especially as it is clearly explained in the directions regarding both platforms -site feedback versus article comments..

Thanks Jeff. I remember back to being a little confused when I first started. Maybe it is the overload of information at the beginning. I'm not sure why there is such confusion. Some people have been here a while and still don't get it.

Hi Jean, it is very annoying. Irv.

Frustrating. Because the remarks are very kind and the person means well. Either the training on this is not sufficient; or people are ignoring it. Thanks for reading and commenting Irv.

It is an ongoing problem as people just do not understand the difference!!!

Paul

That's why I am blogging about it again, Paul. Why do you think there is such a problem?

I really do not know why people just do not understand what they read and it caught me for three months in the beginning!!!

Paul

I think I thought I was supposed to comment on the whole site in the beginning, too. That's why I hate to reject them; but in this case I guess I will have to. If I knew how to contact her; I would have her take out the feedback comment and put in something about the post; and then I could accept it.

Jean, I need a little clarification:

How are you asking for comments and where are you asking for it?
Is it just included in a post/page for readers of the website or are you doing it through the FeedBack system on WA?

Do you include this request in WA blog or question?

Regardless of the answers, you should NOT take them to task ON YOUR WEBSITE, such as in a reply to it; They should have entered their email when they commented; Go for it, however, be prepared for the consequences.

This request was made through the WA submit and ask for comments section and I specified a post. If a post is specified, we are looking for comments that are about that post.

I would never take them to task on my site. In fact, I don't want to take them to task at all. They obviously don't understand the difference between comments and feedback. It was a very nice comment; but not relevant to my post. And commenting on my menu placement put it in to feedback category.

I don't understand your last question; but if you mean do I ask for comments in my post the answer is yes. Specific comments on my post- not feedback.

I hope my answers helped you understand. Usually I can just take their gravatar name and put it in the WA search bar to find them here on WA; but it didn't work this time.

Thanks for commenting, Mickey.

Do you not have access to their email?

The comment system that I have on my site requires an email to allow the comment.

No. Mine isn't like that.

I totally agree!

Rene'

Thanks for commenting Rene.

Feeling like déjà vu...

I would reject the comment, but then send the person a PM to let them know why you rejected it. I have full control about what goes on my site, I refuse to publish a "comment" that's really feedback, just to be nice.

Oh my...Fierce Veronica. Lol. You are right of course.

Thanks for reminding the difference, Jean!

Thanks for commenting Eric.

I would talk to the person and ask if they could write a comment regarding that post, and not accept their feedback comment, but maybe take some suggestions from their feedback to work on your site, and thank them for the feedback! :) Did that make sense? lol

It makes sense; but I couldn't find her here on WA. Her gravatar name didn't come up when I typed it in search bar. Thanks for commenting.

Okay...and they didn't leave an email address with their comment?

Well, if you can't find her name, then I would definitely reject it. You're very sweet, M'lady, but this is a business.

I agree with what you're saying!!! :)

Nope.

Thank you 'yer majesty. I may just have to.

I can see your dilemma. I think I'd contact the commenter.

I don't know how to contact this person. I typed their gravatar name into the search bar here; but it didn't come up. Thanks for commenting.
