A Pregnant Tree?
Is this a pregnant tree? I didn't think they reproduced that way.
Or, do trees get a pot belly when they get older, too?
Neither of these options apply. This tree has formed a burl. Possibly from an injury that caused it to form what might be called "tree scar tissue". I came across this unusual looking tree on one of my weekend walks through the woods. See previous blog:

I was curious, so I looked it up and came up with this definition from Wikipedia:
A burl (American English) or bur or burr (UK English) is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds.
Apparently it can be caused by an injury or by insect infestation, etc. That's why I called it "tree scar tissue".
These burls are in high demand by craftsmen for turning; because they make beautiful (and expensive) furniture, sculptures, etc.
So if you see what looks like a pregnant tree; now you will know it is just a "burl". But if you own the tree; you might see dollar signs; because some pay top dollar for a good sized tree burl.
Have a good day!

Hi Jeannie.....I would rather have the pregnant tree than the money from the burl......wouldn't you?
Nice post on your part.

Yes I would Wayne, but I'm not one of those people who see dollar signs when they look at a tree. People see things differently. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing !
I reminds me also a tree that I saw and the burl looks like an elephant head !

Thanks for reading and replying. You should have taken a picture of the elephant head burl.

Thanks for sharing this Jeannie. Burls are pretty popular here in Alaska with the arts and craft folks. They make all kind of stuff from decorative porch posts, walking sticks, baskets, end tackles, etc. their designs are really interesting.
