It's a Balancing Act

Growing up I thought of myself as clutzy. I "knew" that my balance and my coordination just weren't that good.

Then one day, when I was around 8 or 9 I fell off the hammock. I was sitting on it with my legs dangling over the side, holding a glass of juice. I still remember it clearly. It was only about two feet off the ground. I shifted the wrong way, leaned back too far, and suddenly fell right off it backward.

The reason this memory is clearly etched into my mind is that I didn't spill the juice. Not a drop of it. Despite falling backward, my unconscious remained in control enough for me to not only keep the glass upright but to keep it stable enough I didn't even splash any out.

That moment has always stayed with me because it showed me what I am capable of when I stop over thinking, stop the self doubt and just allow myself to act.

If I tell myself I am a clutzy then I will be. If I tell myself I cannot balance, I won't be able to. And life is a balancing act. Balancing work, home, family, fun, money, etc.

When I over think it and worry about how I'm going to possibly balance everything, I'm setting myself up for failure. Instead, I need to trust that I am capable enough to handle it and then focus on the one task in front of me. I need to be fully present when writing this post and not thinking about or worrying over the other tasks on my to do list.

Once I'm done, I will pick another thing I have to do (such as the dishes) and go be fully present doing that, without constantly checking back here or thinking of my other priorities.

That is how I've learned to best balance my juggling act. How do you tackle yours? Leave me a comment below. :)

Hi Jessica, I suffer from Parkinson's disease and have balance problems. Staying fit works for me. Irv.

Staying fit has always helped me too; I find its a great way to help me deal with stress and stay focused. Glad it helps with your physical balance problems; hopefully it helps with any other balancing struggles as well. :)

I have mobility related fall risks problems Jessica. Life is indeed a balancing act!
