Guys this is driving me nuts. When I first started creating posts I had a lot of trashed ones because of mistakes I made in the learning process, but I didn't realize even thou

Here it is the link

Trashing your posts won’t delete it. You have to permanently delete after you trashed it so it’ll show the new post instead of the old one if, you’re creating the new one with the same name.

Once you delete it permanently, it won’t show up anymore. Another thing that causes the 404 is the permalink as mentioned by elsie.

How do I permanently delete it?

Go to Posts – All Posts – Trash. Hover over your cursor to the post you want to delete and Click Delete Permanently.

Yes I have already done this. I have emptied my trash folder in wordpress. My problem is these 404 pages are still showing up in google search results. How do I get those removed?

I see. I don’t know how to remove it from a search engine, but I read somewhere that a 404 nothing found page won’t affect SEO.

I had quite a few of them, I just told Google not to index it by putting the links to All In One SEO Robots.txt File Editor. After a while, it disappears into thin air :-D

Ok, can you tell me how to add the links to the robots.txt editor? I do not know how to do that. Also, from what I was reading before online is it important to continue to allow the robot to crawl 404 pages? I heard that if you block the robot from crawling them then it doesn't know they are 404s and will never remove the pages.

Here’s the tutorial for that. I think it’s better if you ask your last question at the live chat. Someone may be able to clarify it for you. Meanwhile, read Rob’s comment in this thread

Hi there,

Think of 404's as the air in an empty space. Basically, you have a broken link and it leads to nowhere, so the server you are on just uses a temprary page to say, hey this is empty, fix the link.

If you have 404's, you need to make sure you are linking to the correct pages. If you link a page, then delete it, it will go to a 404 because it just doesn't exist. Replace the link with a page you actually have, and everything will work fine. Double check permalinks (the url's to your pages) to make sure that the link you have and the page you want to go to is the same.

If you have any questions, just let me know and I will do my best to help.

All the best,
Elsie

Elsie I am still confused. These are posts that I deleted off of wordpress that I do not want anymore but are still showing up in google search results. How do I get these to disappear? Thanks in advance.

I had something like this happen back last year, it turned out to be a rogue plugin. I had to go through all the plugins and turn them off, and turn them back on individually until I could locate the culprit.

How were you able to locate the culprit?

By deactivating the plugins & going back to posts to see if the problem had cleared. A process of elimination.

Ok, I deactivated each plugin one by one and tested writing a fake post... the problem is still occurring. Not sure if this could be a windows, wordpress, or plugin problem. Any other ideas? I submitted an email to wordpress support to see if they could figure it out.

Sorry, I'm out of suggestions, but support will help you shortly. They're usually very efficient

Here is the screenshot of the problem.

I know how to change the menu order of my pages, but how do I do that with categories? I can't find an option to change category order.

Categories are usually listed in alphabetical order. If you want to change the hierarchy then simply add a number to the beginning of the category name. e.g.
Anything starting with the letter 'A'
Something else
Zen
could become
1. Zen
2. Something else
3. Anything starting with the letter 'A'
I hope that makes sense :)

Not sure what you mean exactly. Are you saying that if I want for an example the word BASEBALL to appear first I would have to put
A. BASEBALL?
or
1. BASEBALL?

1. Baseball would look better. If you have 10 or more categories then you'd need to use
01. Baseball.
