The scam emails I have been getting have the appearance of originating from companies with which I have an account. One email was so convincing that I contacted the legitimate company customer service department to make sure it did not originate from them. Caveat Emptor
thanks for the share.

Its the Nigerian Letter scam with just with the new twist the old one was getting be a online joke

Big Big scam my friend.I used to get letter,s like these all the time on my first laptop, they are so cleverly written, the next thing you would phone the number and he would ask you for your bank details to put the money in.Big mistake if you give these out but I know you are smarter than that Jason,it,s just takes vigilance when one is on the internet, these people just want to get their money easily and in a corrupt way where as the people here are doing it honestly and upfront.Take care buddy.

Thanks Jason, red flag all over it.

This looks very similar to the "Nigerian Letter" which has been circulating for years. Clever twist claiming to be in GB and Pounds Sterling. The lower case "i" instead of "I" gives him away as a person of lesser education than would be required in his "position". He wants your personal and banking details (and more) and then he'll ask for money to ensure the scheme's success (to pay bribes). Good catch, Jason. ~Marion

Have a look at http://www.419eater.com/
Some great stories there about how people turn the tables on the 419 scammers

What does the 419 stand for?

The number "419" refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code dealing with fraud.

Awesome website, Is it your's? I read all about the 419 and I have to admit it is some scary stuff. I loved seeing the scammers being caught.

LOL - they get more insidiously clever all the time. I've actually seen this one, too. The sad truth is, apparently some people really fall for this kind of ruse ... or else they wouldn't keep doing it.

Jason,

This is a standard Nigerian 419 scam email that has not changed all that much for quite sometime.

If you get an email calling you "Friend" and not using your name, that should be red flag #1.

Red flag #2, if you did not request information from the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) then what makes you think someone from that institution would arbitrarily contact you, their "friend" for any sort of financial dealings.

I would go into explaining how you can read the original info from the email to find the server it was sent from but...

...perhaps another day.

I am happy you did not send your information to them or things may have become ugly.

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions or concerns, drop me a note, I enjoy helping.

My best,

Gary

Yes the RBS thing is funny because I bank at one of their subsidiaries and this is not their style of writing

Remind me never to tell you a secret Jason lol Unfortunately I'm sure there is someone who may fall for this.

WA is the definitive place to find reality from scam, so I tend to share these things here so everyone can see what sort of spam is going around and others can add their input. I never would share anyone at WA's secrets so your safe :)

never ever answer them or give personal details
