Which theme, recommendations?

Thank you Janine for this question!
I'll look into woocommerce now too.

Thank you guys. Going to look into WooCommerce now. Lovely day to you all! :)

Hi - I use WooCommerce on two separate sites.

It works out of the box with PayPal, is incredibly flexible, and it's free (there are paid plugins, but I've only had to buy one so far - to allow WorldPay to be used as a payment gateway).

It's specifically built for ecommerce, and imho, I can't recommend it highly enough.

All the best, Mark

Well, the theme should be related to food supplements. I need the option to enter different shipping costs for different European Countries, per weight.

I use WooCommerce

TopShop is a great one. Very simple theme, looks classy and clean. It's also pretty flexible with customizations

There are thousands to choose from...what kind of Theme are you looking for today? Different Themes support various interests and likes.

There are times when I have to shut everything off except for the screen I'm working on so I can dig in. I'm having a bit of trouble today, matter of fact, but that's because I'm very tired. Sometimes, it helps to get out and take a walk and then come back and attack again. Good Luck!

Get rid of your social life and I promise you'll be fine.

Hi all, thank you all so much for the ideas. I will definitely pick a good bit and implement it.
I always wanted to set up my home office, away from tv, radio, the dogs and other distractions. Guess what I just did, I finally emptied one of the rooms and I will be moving all my gear upstairs and set the home office up tonight.
The office and all your tips, that should help to keep me focus. Right, have to get the hoover, lol... Laters...

Hi Lilly, one thing that helps me the most is, while I'm writing I'll talk it out loud. This helps me to stay focussed on subject, and on how it will appeal to my audience.
For my fishing site I use a loose, informal style telling about my own experiences, which I'm passionate about anyway.
For my WA site, I have to work a little harder at, and research more. But still for either one, by talking it out, that gives me an idea how it might sound to others.
Your personal style is really what maters, it is after all your weblog. :-) Jon

If you keep getting distracted by external factors ask yourself two important questions how will you feel in ten years time if still in same predicament and no closer to your goals because of the distraction. Secondly how will you feel in ten years time when you've achieved your goals because you got rid of the distractions and was able to focus? This normally gives me a massive shove in the right direction which means switching all the distractions off.

Great, will print that out and hang it up just in front of me in my new home office. :D

Writing a post takes time for me because I am focused on bootcamp right now there is so much I feel I have to research and learn to be able to write a well presented page or post. I do it a step at a time. Instead of letting myself get overwhelmed. First I research, then I write and rewrite and usually rewrite again and then I put it up. For me I schedule time each day when I think I won't get interrupted which depends on the day of the week for me, and if life happens I try not to get upset. There are times when I have pulled an all nighter just because I know I can, as it works around everyone and everything else. So I guess my suggestion is schedule it a step at a time!

Hi Lilly,

I can see that you have an issue with staying focused. I sometimes have the same problem. Here are some suggestions you can try to employ to keep you focused on the goal of completing an article or post.

1). Turn off all external devices which includes: Radio, Email, and Cell Phone. You can inform your regular texted group that you are not available during from X to X. The X is the period of time you will not answer any phone calls, or respond to any emails. Your group members will understand.

2). I like to listen to instrumental music when I am writing. Put on a CD you like to help you to relax and focus on the article.

3). When doing research, just use the internet for that purpose. Get the information and return back to your article. I have the same problem with this myself. I will just not let any news or other type of messages get in the way of my writing.

4). If you get blocked, and sometime I do, you can just get up and take a walk or do something that will take your mind off the article. After about 15 to 30 minutes, you can go back to your writing. Before you just jump in, re-read what you have written and get the juices flowing again.

I hope these tips were of help to you.

Good luck!

George Haas

Great tips, I will definitely take those on board!! Thanks George.

You are not the only one!
I (try to) divide my day. newspapers, first thing in the morning.
e-mail next.
facebook and other social media, after the e-mail.
lunch
after lunch
BLOG and work on my website(s)
when i'm stuck, play my sax or build MP3 music files for students.
(could also be play with my dogs, that's more up your alley)

Thanks so much for your contribution!

Don't ask me. I have the same problems all the time. :)

xD

Lol! I'm ADD. Where to start? Actually, just to keep it a sensible length, my best suggestion is a timer, online or one from the kitchen. Just decide what is comfortable, even 5 or 10 minutes work. Take a break, repeat. Works terrific for me and many of my ADD friends.

There's an app you can download, FocusBooster. It's based on the Pomodoro method, 25 minutes on, 5 off. Sometimes that's way too long for me, sometimes it's perfect.

The idea is just to put in x amount of time consistently. It really works. Good luck!

The on and off idea sounds great, will do that! Thanks.

I was wondering how often do you send a newsletter, how often is appropriate? I do not want to "annoy" them with weekly emails. I know from myself, if I get too many, I unsubscribe

You just have to figure out what feels comfortable for you honestly. Some marketers mail weekly. Some mail only when they have something to say. And some mail once or multiple times each day. Personally, about 2-4 times a month is my style. However, I would recommend developing an autoresponder strategy for your list so that as soon as they optin, they'll be guided through a series of messages on autopilot, so that even if you don't mail out manual messages, they'll continually be sent offers and valuable content.

I have read that Thursday is a good day, just in front of the weekend! But I have no personal experience.

I was debating between monthly and bi-weekly myself and for the same reasons. I don't want to annoy and get moved to the Spam folders.

Good question Lilly, looks like your getting some answers on this.

Looks like Cathy took care of this. I don't mind bi-weekly newsletters, even weekly if they're really interesting. One I signed up for hit me daily and that did NOT last long. :)

I have sent out a weekly wellness email to subscribers for a few years now. I can tell from the stats (and of course, these stats are strictly with my list and in my industry ... other stats will be different):

Tuesdays are the best days for folks opening the email
Unsubscribe days are mostly Mondays
About 32% of my lists opens the emails (industry standard of 17%)

Also - most of my subscribers signed up b/c they either attended one of my presentations or because they were a private client.

Transferring that over to a website is a challenge.

Hope this helps and God Bless!
~Cathy

Excellent. It helps indeed! Thank you!

I have the same dilemma.
I aim for the friday and sent out short messages, anything long will be deleted upon receipt or the next monday morning.

Thanks. What is your email opening rate?

I'm not sure what you mean.
when I open my email or when my subscribers open theirs?
I open my email daily, 7 days a week. much to the annoyance of my family and my dogs :)

Let's say you send out 100 emails. How many people open the email? I am asking because you send them out on a Friday and I am trying to figure out which day would be the best for newsletters.

Owk, like that. Honest answer, I don't know.
I don't have too many subscribers yet, therefore I'm not following what they do as it is not so important for me at this moment.

Hey,

I hope you all are well?

Reaching out to you because I need fresh pairs of eyes. My bounce rate is always very high, between 60-70%, average time spend around 1

Featured Comment

Bounce rate is not necessarily a bad thing. It simply means someone is leaving your website and going somewhere else

If you have affiliate links or promotions on your page, people are "bouncing" there which is actually one of your ideal goals as you earn money when people go through your affiliate links.

Do not be too concerned about your bounce rates.

As for your actual time on page, this is obviously determined by how much people are reading of your content. I think that your headlines could be much more captivating:

Ex. http://howtotrainyourdog.org/dog-training-behavior-aids-long-line

Headlines like "Important points:" and "Remember" are doing your website a disservice. You should be capturing interest here and making your audience want to read what is within that section.

If you can get people to read your content, you can build trust...and make product recommendations ($$$). So this is very important and these headlines within your content is definitely something you should be working on.

Great, that's a starting point, will start working on it. Thank you for taking the time for checking!

Site looks pretty good, and great information. Looks like Kyle gave you some advice. Good luck. :))

Hi Lilly, I did just visit your website and I think you did a great job!!! I am very new at this and am learning how to build my website right now, but I can only give you my opinion as a viewer. I thought your website was lovely and informative, but the only thing I didn't like was that the home page seemed a bit too busy. I didn't know what to look at first. Other than that, you did a fantastic job. I am still in the baby phase of learning how to put it all together. Keep up the good work, Lilly.
Wendy

It looks like a good site, and good content, but, it lacks "interest" ... I don't see any personality there, just article, after article. I don't mean to be critical, but, that's my first impression.

Do you keep track of the outgoing links, are they leaving to go elsewhere, or are they going to your affiliate links. Are you making the sales from DoggyDan?

By the way, I promote a lot of DoggyDan on my dog sites too :)

Ouch! ...but thanks for your honest criticism. :)

Janine

Lots of good info, I hope you are making good Doggy Dan Sales :) .. I really like him

Glad you asked the question because now I know not to be too concerned about my bounce rate!
I like your site and the content is interesting to read. The only constructive thing I would say that hasn't already been suggested is not to have your pages listed on both side widgets. :)

Hi Kathy, thanks for checking.

The reason why I have it on both side is because the left sidebar is only visible on the landing/blog page and I want people to see what else they can find when being on other pages. So leave it or remove it? If remove it, left or right? :)

I would just have it on the right, just a personal preference. I think it would make the page look less cluttered. :)

Done. Space for more categories now. :)

Thanks again!

Janine

You're welcome. :)

I think it's a nice-looking site and it looks like it has some great content on it, but. . . I, for one, cannot read with that video talking at me. There's no way to pause it or turn it down without killing the sound on my computer. That would make me bounce out.

Hi Carla, just implemented it and working on the settings. :)

Thanks for looking at my site and I am very glad YOU like it! :D

So, that's sorted. :)

I can't answer your question yet, I'm still a young Student here, but I clicked the Like button because you reached out for help and our Teacher Kyle and our fellow WA members springed into action to help you. And that's a beautiful thing! Your site is very informative.

Thanks Frank, much appreciated! Going to follow you now and watch your progress! :) All the best to you!

Did you get feedback from Kyle, noticed you in chat earlier. :)

Yep. But guess you have seen it by now. :)

I don't know if you have already made the changes suggested but I had a hard time finding anything to criticize with your site. The main thing I noticed is that the font is small. I don't know how to change that easily or if you even need to. My poor eyes just have a hard time reading smaller print online.
I do think your page organization is spot on. I liked that the blog posts were listed in the left sidebar so I could go from post to post. I think your information is great as well. As you continue to add to your site, I can see you becoming a site for dog owners to refer to.
I wonder if we worry too much about our "rankings" and "readers" in the beginning. How long have you had your site up? I really tried to find something to criticize and usually find something. I couldn't find anything on your site. You use colored font to catch the eye, you use Q&A, and lists. Your pictures are placed well and your ads are not taking attention away from your content. In fact, I got some inspirations for my own site from you.
So, bottom line, don't worry as much about your rankings. It will happen. Keep on adding content because you are doing a good job. I'm not just saying that, I mean it. Good luck girl and reach out anytime.

WOW! ...and WOW! I am absolutely flattered! Thank you so much for all the nice words!! :D

I will check and see what I can do with the font size. Changing it in css isn't too hard, just need to find it. :)

Thanks again, you made my day and put a smile on my face!

Janine

Hi Liily. I don't have time at the moment to read everything on your site but it looks great to me. Full of lots of helpful info and I like the audio and video training. I am no expert but I really like your site. One thing I would recommend would be to make some of the pages easy to read at a glance. i.e. the "Toilet Training a Puppy" page. There's a lot of "plain" test to read. Sometimes it's easier for people to follow if the main points are listed/bulleted or summarized in some way. Hope this helps and good luck!! Olive

Kyle suggested to work on my headlines, maybe I could implement that as I do not have it in all articles.

Thank you!

Great idea and as I said, you have lots of interesting content. Wishing you all the best. It's great to be part of WA getting feedback from people in the same situation!

Hey Lily can you move the video to the landing page before the fold so the visitors can connect with Dan and the dogs immediately? That would make a big difference I think. It would make the difference for me.

Hi! Thank you for taking a look, much appreciated!

So you mean add the video above the post excerpts? That's a great idea! I just don't know how. lol

My theme won't allow me to do it so would have to do it by css and I don't have a clue about it. :/ You got methinking now. Will try to find a solution!

Thanks!!!

Hey,

me again, with another question. :)

I keep getting crawling errors in Google Webmaster Tools for pages/posts I have deleted weeks ago. I have added the sitemap a

404 error is not a problem, that is in a Google interview I saw online. You can check it out here: http://youtu.be/-GlxLlpm3Ew

Thank you!

I have read before that this is not a big deal really but I do not like errors and if I get any, I want to know why and how to fix it. That's me. :-D

I know what you mean, not sure you can. I corrected some 404 error pages before, but the error still shows up. :)

Apparently they still show up because Google indexed/cached them before I deleted the pages. Now Google wants to crawl these pages and of course, they are not there anymore.
I have requested to get these url's removed. After a couple of hours my request was approved. So let's see if these errors will show up again, I don't think so. :)

Google Webmaster Tools --> Google Index --> Remove URL

Oh yeah, I forgot about the remove URL....let me know how it goes. :))

Don't worry about it. sounds like a 404 error, ti won't hurt your rank. When you delete a page you can link to a new page, its called a redirection link, so if they click on the deleted page it will link to another page.

Heres a link to deleting 404 errors in webmasters, obviously your page got indexed before you submitted your sitemap.....http://agent-seo.com/seo/removing-404-errors-from-googles-index/ it doesn't look to good to the users if you have to many of these 404 errors...so....

Great. Thank you. Requested removal. :) The page is a bit old though.
Removal Request is now under the tab "Google Index".

That's some good info, I have 3 404 errors, and I am careful not to have anymore, but I have never deleted them.
I was looking on google analytics, and in the behavior overview it will show you how many 404's you have, and how many times someone has clicked on them. All 3 of my pages had like 1 or 2 clicks, and I have well over 1000 pageviews on my site, so I didn't worry about it.

Hi there,

I get the same and I've added a sitemap much later then I deleted pages/posts.

They may get that info from the cache. I'm sure it can be deleted, but that's something I don't know. I think it needs to be done via ftp.

However, if it only shows errors for deleted pages, you don't need to worry about it. The error occurs, because they're deleted and can't be "crawled".

Hope this helps. :)
