This is a short article about two things:

  • How to get more views on your YouTube videos by setting the right tags,
  • Link to a FREE little tool I created, that you guys can use to get the right tags for your videos.

The Premise: How to Get More Views On YouTube

Alright so as you probably know by now I'm working on a brand new YouTube channel and hence I'm doing more research about video content, as well as getting viewers to my videos.

I learned that these are the things that are absolutely crucial to getting viewers:

  • Thumbnail: Grabs the attention.
  • Title: Includes the keyword, raises curiousity.
  • Video Description: Min. 250 words long, explaining what the video is all about.
  • Video Tags: Using tags that help YouTube understand what your video is about.

The first three things are totally under our control. But the last one, the video tags, are complete guesswork if you don't know which tags are being favored in the YouTube algorithm.

The Problem: How To Find The Right Tags For Your YouTube Videos

Finding the right tags is actually quite easy when you think about it this way:

  1. Search for your video's keyword / title on youtube (when logged out).
  2. Check the top ranking videos for that search.
  3. Copy their tags!

But there's a problem: YouTube is hiding the tags!

They are however available inside the source code of the video page.

This is where my little tool comes into play, which I've set-up for myself to get these tags, and you can all use it for free too of course.

It looks very ugly at the point of writing this article, but it gets me the tags that I need for my videos...

The Solution: Get The Exact Same Tags Of The Top Ranking Videos

So the solution is very easy: Either you install an extension in your Chrome web browser that gets the tags for you...

Or if you are like me and try to keep everything as lightweight as possible, you can use my crappy-looking little tool by clicking here.

Warning: The tool is VERY bare-bones at the point of writing this... but it gets the job done!

Here's what this tool does: It checks the source code of the video page, and extracts all the video tags for you.

And here's how to use it:

  1. Go to the video for which you want to know the tags.
  2. Copy the whole URL for that video.
  3. Paste the URL into my ugly little tool here.
  4. Click on the "Get Tags" button.
  5. Wait for it to load.
  6. The list of tags appears!

I Immediately Got Some Views After Updating My Tags

I had no views on my videos, but the moment I copied the tags from the highest ranking videos for the same search term... I almost immediately got a handful of views on my videos!

Yes a handful of views is not much (almost pitiful) but it is much better than no views...

And my channel is brand new, so I'm sure this works even better the more authority my channel has (= more videos and subs).

Future Plans?

I really made this tool for myself because manually copy-pasting the keywords from the source code was getting very annoying and time-consuming.

I also shared it in my Discord group and someone immediately replied that it was very useful to him.

So if it's useful to others, I definitely wanted to share it with you guys here on WA.

If I get the time, I will improve the visuals in the future... It is very ugly right now, lol.

But at least it get's the job done :D

Hope it helps! I'd appreciate a comment from you below, and maybe a like for this article as well. Thank you!

Hi! James,

I am so much interested on all the info you shared about videos using Youtube. I will follow you. I started a Travel and Tours Website, where I want to create Videos about places to go but while I am learning how to create videos, I want to start copy and share videos about my niche. do you know how can I do that without copyright problems or free videos to share and use commercially. I want also to embede the code to my Page. Thank you so much. I appreciate your input and suggestions...

Hi Shierly, thank you for following me! You can always embed videos on your website if they are on YouTube, that's no problem at all. So feel free to use existing videos inside your blog posts until you've uploaded your own!

Hi! James, Thank you so much for the info that you shared to me.I appreciate it so much. All the Best!

Hi James. This looks really useful. I’m gonna have a play with this tomorrow. Thanks very much 😀

Hey Dave! It's really not much, I hope you're not disappointed when you see it tomorrow haha. But it serves its purpose at least!

Wow, this is awesome. Thank you for sharing! I will start with videos in the near future, so I'm boomarking this. Thanks a million!

Hey Jessica, thank you for your kind words, really means a lot to me knowing I created something that's helpful! Even if it's the ugliest, simplest, most bare-bones "tool" out there >.<

When you start your channel, send me the link. I'll watch, like, subscribe, etc. All these little "signals" help with getting a brand new channel off the ground!

Hey James! Looks like an awesome tool! But when I tried it it told me ''invalid URL submitted''. What could cause that?

Thank you!

Hi Audrey, that's super weird! I'm sorry it caused that error. Can you show me the exact URL that you entered? I'll have try to fix it asap!

Thank you James for sharing some good information. Bookmarked for sure. Working on my very first YouTube video as we speak.

Mark

Hey Mark that's great! Send me the link when it's uploaded, I'll watch it, give a thumbs up, subscribe, all the good stuff :) Every little thing helps to get a new channel off the ground!

Sounds awesome, thanks.

Hey Lynne thanks for your comment and for reading the article! I just read in your bio that you travel the country almost constantly, that sounds like a great YouTube opportunity to me. It might not be what you had in mind right now when starting out, but it could be a plan for when your blog is set up and you want to use video to drive more traffic later down the road.

You're very welcome.
I'm thinking of starting up a you tube channel for my website.
carvedfairyhouses.com
but don't know how I would use it for my travel, any suggestions?

I tried to access your site but it's stuck on loading! I'll check it out again later / tomorrow, hopefully the server will respond again and I can access your page. I'll give you feedback as soon as I've had the chance to review it.

Thanks.

Okay the page loaded now very fast for me. Your topic is perfect for images & video, actually! Anything related to woodcarving, you can take photos and show it on video: Tools, blueprints, finished projects, work in progress, books, artists, etc. The opportunities are pretty much endless!

And you've been carving for 20 years now, I'm sure people will love to hear you talk about your expertise, in addition to reading it on your blog.

Thanks for the feed back, I haven't learned now to put in pictures yet. That's the next lesson I think, but I'm looking forward to putting in pictures.

Sounds good! Keep up the great work Lynne!
