Hey there and a Big Welcome to Day 5 of Learn How to Build a Website Yourself in WordPress 2017 – let’s keep moving on!

NOTE:

In order to see any of the previous day’s posts – check out My Posts blog roll on the bottom right hand side.

We completed Part 2 of Jays 4 Part video series yesterday, so now we’re up to Part 3 as linked below:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/2017-live-niche-site-case-study-series-3-of-4/play

Here’s a recap on what we did yesterday – Day 4:

  • Added my site to Google Analytics and retrieved Tracking ID
  • Added Tracking ID to All in One SEO
  • Added the site to Google Search Console – verifying ownership using Google Analytics tracking
  • Connected Google Analytics & Google Search Console

So today – Day 5 is all about Content

Jay points to a specific post that he created in November 2015 but is still very relevant today – Jays 10 Step Process on Getting Content to Rank:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/magistudios/blog/jays-10-step-process-on-getting-content-to-rank

This is a reference that goes with today’s training and I can see after checking it out, that it acts as a great ‘go to’ checklist when creating content that you want to rank.

Note: Once again as mentioned in Day 1

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/jacquelines1/blog/day-1-learn-how-to-build-a-website-yourself-in-wordpress-2017

For those of you that aren’t a Wealthy Affiliate Premium member, you won’t be able to access Jays training unless you sign up here at WA as a Premium member.

The WA membership as a Starter Member is Free and for Premium it’s $19 for the first month and $49 thereafter.

Just this step by step live training that I’m creating these posts on, is well worth the price as Jay takes you, in video form, from start to finish on building a niche site.

That being said, let’s move on…

Jay starts off talking about branding and building a logo for his website. At this point in time, this is not something I’m particularly interested in for this particular website, but if you're interested and you wish to see how he goes about this, you can follow on at the start of that particular training at 18:52 mins to 38:20 mins

A recap of the branding and building a logo is:

  • Jay goes to Adobe Stock and licenses an image for his logo
  • He then uses Adobe Illustrator to create his logo – Jay uses Illustrator as he’s been using it for over 12 years and has a subscription with them
  • He then uploads the logo to his website

Create a Logo for Free

Jay suggests Canva as a great resource for creating logos for free and goes through making a quick logo from 33:35 mins – 36:26 mins

OK, Let’s get onto Content…

Step 1: Optimize the Pages/Posts for Search Engine Optimization – SEO

Notes on Content and Ranking

Adding Content – since we’re building a new website, the suggestion is to add content a couple of days a week for a couple of weeks and then you can vamp it up from there. As you add content make sure to create internal links on some of these pages/posts

Affiliate Links – once again because we’re building a brand new site it’s OK to create external links to other sites (information sites such as Wikepedia) at the beginning BUT NOT to affiliate sites. The reasons for this are:

1. New websites with no affiliate links rank faster than those with affiliate links – Jay split tested this and it proved to be correct

2. You want people to stay on your sight longer to begin with, Google counts this as part of their SEO metric and it helps to increase your ranking if your visitors engage with your content longer

Step 2: Adding Links

Types of links

  • Internal – these are links from one page to another ‘inside’ of your site – eg., from your About page to your Contact page
  • External – these are links from site A to site B – in our case from our site linking out to say an affiliate site
  • Incoming – these are links coming into our site – say from a blog post outside of our site TO our site – these are called backlinks

Writing the About Page

Now, in order to create this part of the post I will just be giving bullet points as to what Jay lays out in his pages and we start with the About page, with writing the

  • First paragraph: Welcome to______ (main keyword) just a short paragraph
  • Second paragraph: Created a text link (see how to create a text link below) in this paragraph linking out to Wikipedia using my websites main keyword as the text link
  • The idea from here is to carry on creating the content for this page and once that is done scroll down to the bottom of the page and fill in the Meta Title and Meta Description

These are the Character Lengths Required For Each:

Meta Title Length: 55 Characters

Meta Description Length: 160 Characters (Jay suggests 155 so it’s easy to remember - 55 and 155)

The Meta Title will be About ________ (your main keyword) – up to 55 characters

The Meta Description should include About ________ (your main keyword) in the first 50 or so characters – write the description up to about 155 characters

Then click Update

Quick 'How to' on Creating a Text Link:

  • Find where you want to link to in Wikipedia – copy the URL
  • Go to your page in your WordPress Dashboard and highlight the text you want to create as the link
  • Click on the ‘link’ icon in the top bar and you can paste in your URL
  • Click on the ‘wheel’ which is the link options – or settings
  • Put a tick in the Open link in a new tab box – this means that it will open in a new window
  • Click Update

So that’s the end of that process for today - I'm going to leave it there until tomorrow!

In Jays training he has a step 3 outlined - Step 3: Adding Profit Elements to the Site

But he only just barely touches on this today, so I’m guessing we’ll be covering that more in depth tomorrow…

So that Completes Part 3 of Jays 4 Part Series

I’ll see you tomorrow with Part 4 and the next episode of Learn how to build a website yourself in WordPress in 2017.

And again, you’re most welcome to leave a comment or ask a question below if you wish to do so, thanks and …

Cheers,

Jacqueline

Thank you, Jacqueline. I remember it took me a while before I got around to adding a logo. Someone actually suggested it as part of feedback I got on my website. I used Photoshop since that is what I am used to using, but it's really good to have one for sure.

Hey there Lidia,

It's great you added a logo to your website and Photoshop is a great way to do that.

I'm trying to leave this particular site as 'clean' as possible without ANY distractions for my visitors, but hey you never know...

I might change my mind further on down the track.

That's what I love about building websites, you get to personalize them as you go along.

Thanks again Lidia, cheers,

Jacqueline

WOW, congratulations you learned a lot.

Hey there Luba,

Yes, I've certainly learned a lot, even though I've built many websites before I've never followed a step by step process on how to build a website in WordPress so this has been a very welcome process.

AND, now I have a written process that I can follow which will definitely speed up the process.

Thanks for coming along and leaving a comment Luba, hope things are going great for you here at WA,

Cheers,

Jacqueline

Thanks.

Hey there Thomas,

That's great you're getting lots from the posts, what's great about the platform here at WA is that those posts will always be available so you can use them over and over.

I think the recaps will be great in the future, when I'm nearing the end of these posts I will put them in a Word document to share.

Thanks for coming along and leaving a comment Thomas, it's much appreciated,
