DON'T FALL FOR TRENDS:

I have seen way too many people follow trends assuming that's where the money is!

Is there money to be made by trends? Yes! However you have to get your foot in the door quickly so to speak and capitalize and many people just starting out don't have the skill level required to set-up a site/ create content with their keyword research/ and get the site live and ranking quickly to capitalize on this trend.

I saw it with fidget spinners which now sit on discount store shelves, I saw it with people selling stuff to make slime, loom bands, certain cell-phone cases and many more items.

Think LONG-TERM!

Is your niche something that will be around well into the future? Does your niche solve problems that people constantly have trouble with? Does your niche offer soultions to problems people have? Are the products in your niche producing enough commission income for you to earn a fair income for all your time? (some niches may be better off not taking on if the products are all low cost products because then you need more traffic and conversions to earn income)

Some examples are weight-loss, wealth/money niches, addiction these are broad niches which can be broke down into sub-niches and you can turn a profit with products in these sub-niches. These niches are also niches that will always have a marketplace or people looking for solutions to problems they may have. (Some people morally may say well I feel bad about earning an income by telling addicts, overweight people about products or programs to earn money. However if you are potentially helping to solve a problem for them, should you really feel bad?)

In summary think about niches that are something that will last long-term, and have products that can earn you a fair income.

Anyways to avoid writing a full book today, consider different factors before choosing your niche or investing too much time, money into niches that may not last long-term.

Best of luck to you all!

Staying a jump ahead of following the money Jack!

Hello Jack good point. At first I was not certain why following trends was a bad thing. Having spent my career as a planner, trends are one of the factors we take into consideration when preparing strategic plans. After reading the blog however, I realized you were referring to fads or short term trends, especially in the toys or weight loss categories. Thanks for the post. Very sound advice concerning niche selection.

Yes short-term trends/ fads are something many people fall for and then they say I am not earning any money... Many times the reason is because there's not much of a market left for that particular item anymore by the time they get their website going.
